He hadn't expected it to be like that.

Compared to his first time Standing, this time had been much more emotional, much more violent, much more sad. There had been mauling, lots of it, and many of the Candidates had been harmed, though whether it was slight or substantial, he didn't really know. There had been disappointment, for both himself and many others, but that was standard. Still, those who didn't Impress were always welcome to the next Hatching, provided they were still within age. There had been joy, and it usually extended to everyone when a dragonet Impressed. And there had been anger, many Candidates blaming the girl who Touched them too early.

The little Blue...

His throat constricted and he shook his head violently, shuddering at the memory. Why couldn't he find His? Had His simply not shown up? Or was it because of the girl? Because she had Touched them too early? Had she really killed him? There were so many questions, so many unanswered mysteries around the Blue and the dud egg. His ears were still ringing with the frenzied cries of the Blue, the keening of the dragons as he blinked Between to die. To say a Hatching was eventful was usually an understatement, but this one had been... a tragedy. Catastrophic, cataclysmic, catatonic - any of them applied, really, and he was in no mood to pick one.

When he had told his parents of the night, his father had immediately agreed to let him take a few days off from Smithing, which was unusual, to say the least. But it was what he needed, he knew, and there was nothing more than Rumir wanted to do right now was crawl into a hole and cry: the kind of attitude wouldn't do well in the Forge.

So, he was leaning against a wall, not far from where the entrance to the Sands were, his head tilted back and staring at the sky. If only he could have done something for the Blue. He knew it didn't make a difference, really, but he wanted so badly for the little one to come back. He knew that wasn't possible, either. He could feel his eyes pricking with tears, and angrily wiped them away. He had no right to cry, shardit. He could only imagine how the Blue's clutchmates felt, and how Theirs felt, and shards, how Tideal felt. Another Hatching had slipped through his fingers, and that meant he would be Standing for a forth time. It must have been truly devastating, watching the Blue go Between and knowing the last egg was dead.

Faranth, what he wouldn't give to change that.

Walking helped him think, but not about any topic he'd like to. Dwelling was definitely not Tideal's favorite thing, but it was very difficult to stop, and little could be done to help it. Yet another hatching had left him to walk away by himself and this latest one was the most tragic by far. He was mad, frustrated, angry, and if he were to try and describe it it would sound very much like that blue's despairing cry. A sound that had left him feeling hollow since the moment it rang in his ears. This would of course be like the last hatching. Something only time could heal.

He pondered going back to the hold for a few days, back to the usual schedule to get things off his mind. Maybe make something nice to bring back with him... or give him time to decide if he wanted to come back at all. He doubted he would feel the same returning to the glass and the fires. The heat of the oven and the feel of warm glass, freshly formed and still holding its iridescent, fiery sheen. His sister, his brothers. That was why he left. He felt choked there and here... here he just felt alone.

The glasssmith walked for another ten minutes, and stopped as he passed the entrance to the sands. A place of fate and new beginnings. He wished he could contribute to its magic, but he must not have the heart for it. It took him a few more steps to notice Rumir, leaning against a wall looking like he was thinking on a similar track as Tideal was. He walked over, let his back hit the wall, and slid down where he could sit on the ground.

"Something to think about, isn't it?" He said sadly.
