Phase was tempted to laugh. She expected as such, and it was no suprise. She walked over to a nearby armchair, trailing her fingers across the back. "Well, I figured on the whole killing thing. It would be an easy choice to make, considering the circumstances, but it would be a lot harder to refuse, in my opinion..." She said, looking up at him with her dark eyes. As she processed the rest of his statements, she couldn't help but wonder what made him tick, what his motives behind being a villian, what was the reasons . "No small talk. Then, what do you do? Besides kill, I mean." She said, feeling the need to be specific. For she already knew about the killing part. .

He smirked. It was amazing just how pointed you could make a conversation if you simply stated that there would be no small-talk. People seemed to grow a pair, metaphorically speaking, when you demanded they be more forward. Questions became more intrusive and blunt, answers became more honest and straightforward. "Sleep." And think. But who gave a damn that he thought? They all thought they knew just what he was thinking all the time, so there was no point in reiterating what they thought they knew. What did he think, though? He thought about everything. He debated with himself the value, meaning, and purpose of life, morals, government, and... everything. He contemplated and analyzed every aspect of being human.

"And what keeps our dear Phase busy when she's not saving the day?" he asked, with perhaps a hint of sardonicism.

Phase rolled her eyes at the sleep comment. "Well, thank you Captain Obvious..."She said sarcastically. His question took her by suprise. She should have expected the same thing, but it never crossed her mind. She paused and thought a few moments before she gave him an acceptable answer . "Avoid trying to save the day." Phase admitted. It was true, every time she heard a report on the news, got a call from her father, anything related to villians and saving the day, she tried to avoid it. It was only when, like a while ago with Khaos, she met up with it unexpectedly. Only then, and reluctantly at that, did she interfere. She waited, wanting to see what he thought of that statement. .

Nightshade smirked. She obviously didn't believe the scope of his daily activities could be that limited. Her loss, he decided. For once he was being perfectly honest and Phase wasn't hardly listening. The irony was enough to make his smirk a sadistic grin as he turned to stare out the window once more. "Not the Paladin of Truth they portray on TV?" he inquired rhetorically. Under his breath, and to himself he muttered, "Perhaps I knew... Perhaps that's why we're here." Or perhaps I ought to simply drive my knife deep so she doesn't stop bleeding until she's empty. At that last thought, he ran the tip of his tongue across the chewing surface of his upper teeth. It could have been mildly disturbing-- like coming face to face with a cannibal-- if he'd been facing unwilling Hero.

"But you still have the heart of Gold, it seems."

Phase sighed, sitting herself on the arm of a nearby couch. "No, I'm not a hero that likes to be in the limelight, telling others to do good, taking out the bad guys at any cost. Being a super shouldn't require us to provide our services for the common good, or be deemed a villian if what we want is different from the norm..." She ranted, frustrated at the fact that she was always being told by her father that it was her obligation to help, to use her powers for good. . 'More like make him look good....' She thought icily to herself."Me? Have a heart of gold? What makes you say that?" She asked curiously, wondering why he thought so, wondering what he would think if he knew her decision to be a 'hero' was based on revenge? Would that make her have a heart of gold? .

"Regardless of your intentions or opinions, Phase, you still do it. You don't have the evil streak in you: there's no comparison between me and you." He turned to face her now, leaning back on the window sill. "For the metaphor's sake, your gold may be faded, but it's still gold none the less." Alexander was making himself dislike Phase the more and more he talked about her. After all, she still stood for the system. The regulations, the laws, she still defended them even if she didn't like to. She still had that moral drive to make it happen. "You're compelled to do the right thing, Phase. And that's why we're enemies."

Behind his back, he'd drawn his knife. Outside, the sun was beyond the city's outline, and shadows were getting awfully big. And dark. Nightshade spontaneously sublimated, and hardly two seconds later the shadows reformed over Phase's unsuspecting form. As he dropped, Nightshade's blade was aimed at her neck.

Phase considered what he was saying. True, she was compelled, but only out of guilt. At the moment, inside her, there was a whirlwind of realizations and emotions. She was enraged because her mother had been killed trying to save people by villians. Should she blame the humans or the supers? Or should she blame her mother for her own death? Beyond that, shouldn't her father let her make her own choices on the hero or villian aspect? It seemed he was as controlling as the rules and laws she tried to uphold. She was tearing herself apart on the inside instead of fitting the pieces together to make her whole, herself. The agony showed in her face now, and thats when she noticed the moving shadows. She watched as Nightshade reformed above her, holding the blade pointed at her neck. She froze, waiting for him to catch up to her, and when she could, she deftly grabbed the hilt of the knife, fighting against his force, barely keeping it from slicing through her main artery. "You know what? Maybe I should let you kill me...I know it would make things alot easier for me if you did..." She said as she felt the blade nick her throat, and a small trickle of blood flowing from the wound made its way down her neck . . . .

Almost immediately, the fire from Nightshade's eyes dissipated, transforming into an expression of curiosity. Still, he applied enough force to keep the blade close to her neck. There was a mixture of both curiosity and disdain. Why was she so submissive? He hated it, but at the same time hated that she would be this way. Alexander wanted an explanation before he would make the final strike. "What a waste of ability!" he growled, bringing his face close to hers so he could intimidate her and speak quietly so as not to disturb the neighbors. "And why would you want to take the coward's way out?"

At his question, anger grew in Phase's mind, not towards Nightshade though. Her mind flew to all the times she was told she wasn't good enough, a disgrace. When she did finally speak, her voice was shaking due to her rage . "When you spend every day of your life being told that you are a failure, that you are letting someone down, that you are disappointing, by someone who is always supposed to be there for you, no matter what you do, no matter who you become.... "She trailed off, not knowing how to finish that statement. She was still fighting his arm off as best as she could, which still held some evidence she wanted to live, for if she didn't, all she had to do was stop fighting. "When you aren't allowed to be yourself without facing harsh criticisms from those that are supposed to be there for you, support you, you don't know what to do, only to follow to make it stop, or at least do enough to please them so they leave you alone....Why do I save people at all? Its because I want them to be who they are, because at least when you are truly yourself, nothing to hold you back, you are free... She told him, tear rolling down her cheek, from anger and sadness. .

Something in her final sentences clicked with Nightshade and he backed off. He maintained a fighting stance, knife forward and at the ready, but he was mulling over Phase's words. He might still prefer her alive after all...

Because not all these... 'Evil' people are like me. Raping, torturing, kidnapping, robbing, and the like. There were forms of evil that abused mankind instead of thinning out the weak ones like Alexander did. She eliminated the oppression so that people could be themselves, so Nightshade could destroy the truly insignificant cretins.

Alexander smirked. Her emotional baggage was... irritating, but he supposed it didn't help that she was a woman. "Then perhaps... I need you, in a sense."

Phase blinked in disbelief when he backed off. She composed herself, straightening up, wiping around her eyes, and using her powers to seal the small cut in her neck. Noticing his defensive stance, she raised her guard. She had come to realize something, Phase needed to stand up to her father, regardless of the outcome. She was sick and tired of trying to appease him, and that was coming to an end
When Nightshade said he needed her, she raised an eyebrow.
"Need me? In what sense would that be?.... "She asked, she had blocked off all other ties to her emotions at the time being, focusing on the now. You wouldn't have even known that moments ago she let out some held back feelings. . .

Nightshade just laughed at her, his hand dropping to his side. Still doesn't get it. None of them do, nor will they ever! He chuckled again and strode to the window. Gesturing toward the cityscape below with his empty hand, Alexander began his first ever monologue.

"This city is filled with weak and slovenly characters, bottom-feeders surviving on what few morsels trickle down the system. They lack ambition, desire, and perhaps even the willpower to face any challenge in their life. They ruin the world almost as much as those who manipulate them." He pointed at her with the knife. "You guarantee their freedom to make those decisions, uprooting the oppression and destroying the abusers. With you present, I can be assured that my targets are wholly inept."

Phase grew a bit frustrated when he laughed at her, but she brushed it off, and listened to what he was saying. Ah, the noted villian monologue. With every word, she tried to see things from his point of view. So, his main target were the ones that polluted society with their lazyness and lack of ambition. That was something she could understand. "Makes sense to me. Only the strong survive, process of elimination by evolution, the basic idea of the matter. Have at them, the world would probably be better off without them.... "She stated, sure, he'd still be killing people, regardless the level, it was bad, but, it were the ones who were already wasting their lives away, not trying, barely existing anyways. What Nightshade was doing was merely speeding up that process.. . .

Alexander fought down the greatest of urges to correct her: he'd already said enough and there was no reason for her to know more. Regardless, it was obvious she didn't quite grasp his reasoning or methodology. The fact that she could accept this as okay, however, was rather surprising. Then again, all their previous encounters had been in conflict. Who was Nightshade to think he knew Phase? That thought alone just about summed it up: he didn't even know her actual name.

The brief peace was broken in a split second when Nightshade lunged yet again with his knife. The blade was aimed to slice open her windpipe if she wasn't ready, but Alexander expected that she would be. After all, Phase was sharing a room with Nightshade: she should always be on guard.

Phase watched as Nightshade processed what she had said. Surely the fact that she was okay with it would be suprising, but if it was, he didn't show. What he did do was lunge at her again with the knife, this time, she wasn't going to let it get so close to her, in one aspect. The easiest thing for her to do was make her body intangible. Within seconds, her matter appeared as if it was a 3-D hologram, or a ghost, either one would work, and when Nightshade got to her, he would pass straight through her. . "What is up with you wanting to slice 'n dice me this evening?.... ".. . .
