Hey guys! I'm sorta confused right now because my brothers' Japanese friend says that Jrock is the same thing as Jpop... I don't really think that's true but please correct me if I'm wrong... Thanks! smile

Depends, much of the music genre there is nearly identical. Both Jpop and Jrock have simuliar and different qualites, which make it unique on its own. You can tell by the instruments or the sound synth.
Pop is extremely different because is has a more smooth beat with mix of hard beats when you compare it to rock in our region in North America. Take Micheal Jackson when he was alive, he added soul and meaning to Pop as the basis for future artists. As for rock we know it as today the bands such as Seether, Metallica, AC/DC, Elvis Presely and so forth.
Now for the Japanese Experiance, Japanese Pop has a remix of sound containing a bit of a light club/techno beat. While Japanese Rock has a direct action with a rough feel to the lyrics and sound.
Each song does have a meaning to them pending on the lyrics on sound synth that will determine, but we can have a Remix of both known as JRRP.
In JRRP, we notice that both have been influenced by both genres (yes I know, this is confusing, but I'm doing my best to help from prior knoweledge), they both combine the synth and instumental. Just like in North America, we've done the same thing.
I hope I cleared things up...

I agree with Kiba. Its really the instruments that set the music apart. Though a lot of the Jrock bands you listen to may sound sort of like a Jpop band simply because of the instruments used in one song. But in the end there is a difference.
