What are some bad habits you've picked up while playing guitar? When I first started playing, I barred everything, even power chords and regular notes. Because of that, when I started learning major and minor chords (which I also learned way later than I should've, about a year into playing), I had real problems. It took me about a week to get out of that habit though. I've been playing for a little over two years without lessons. Another bad habit I kind of still have is that I still can't play with vibrato. I've watched tons of videos and whatnot trying to learn, but I still can't do it.

80% of the time I flare out my fingers too far when decending/acending, my thumb is too high up on the back of the neck initially when I play from the 12th fret and up, and I don't use enough economy picking/fretting-I consider that to be a flaw in my technique.
I hate thinking about my flaws (hurts my ego), but I definately need to address them.

I also tend to wrap my thumb around the top of my fretboard, especialy when I'm playing things on the b and high e strings. I generally like to think as bad habits as not being bad things, but something that makes me more of a distinguished musician. I'd still really like to learn how to use some good vibrato though.

And thats true to an extent, but you want to be careful that its not limiting your potential.

Personally, i think habbits are great. They define who you are as a player and help develop your own style. Listen to hendrix, or B.B or randy rhoads, or any of the greats really None of them sound the same and thats what makes them so good is their unique recognizable sound/style
Every guitar player from the 80s sounds like van halen, and the ones that dont, are the ones we still remember

All That Remains is my favorite band, but i don't play anything that sounds remotely close to them.

I guess it comes down to your definition of what a bad habit is. To me a bad habit is lifting your fingers off the fretboard way too much which makes you a slower player.
I don't think I want to be known for being a slow player. There's a difference in technique and style. When I hear 'bad playing habits' I think bad habits in technique. Thats just my 2 cents tho.
