Lieutenant Nyota Uhura....
It had been several days earlier when the Lieutenant had been on break, sitting in the lounge, fiddling with Spocks lute. One way or another.. she was going to learn how to play the damn thing. She couldn't help but imagine the way Spock had played the instrument. Whereas she had merely been plucking strings, the Vulcan himself had played the lute as if he were painting a picture, with utter grace and flawlessness.
She cringed as she shrill sound of the lute had echoed throughout, what she thought was the empty room.
She heaved a sigh and stared down.. She remained deep in thought until a pair of arms encircled her and a familiar face loomed over her shoulder. "You'll never get the pitch right if you pluck the string so stridulently."
She gasped, her cheeks flushed. "... Spock... I didn't hear you come in."
"That is because you were attempting to play this instrument in a rather vehement manner... Here, allow me." With his arms still wrapped around her, A harmonious tune erupted from the instrument as the Vulcan strummed his fingers across it.
"See? Like this." Spock gave the lute back to her.
"Now you try."
Uhura nodded, and strummed her fingers across the lute, just as Spock did. Once again, another shrill tune erupted from it.
Uhura cringed. "I don't think it likes me."
Spock opened his mouth to object. "That would be illogical.. as instruments cannot harbor feelings towards..."
Uhura rolled her eyes. "Oh hush..."
He took the lute from her arms and set it on the table beside her. "Well.. it appears to be functioning properly. No detached strings of any sort... and I just tuned it yesterday. What could possibly be the problem?"
Uhura leaned her elbow onto the table. "I mimicked your exact hand movements.. yet I still can't get it to sound right... Does it only play for Vulcans....?"
"Species has nothing to do with the ability to play an instrument." Spock inquired. "Its all about skill... or so to speak." He strummed his fingers along the lute once again. The glorious sound filled the room.
"Well...." Uhura looked down. "I'll just have to practice more, now won't I?"
