"I don't think it's possible to know if an egg is dead or not, I would assume that if the egg doesn't hatch with the rest of the clutch that would be a very big indicator. Why would it be connected to anything else?" She looked at him from the corner of her eye, what was he getting at?
"Ahaha!" She chuckled, "Oh, I am so glad Ahoy isn't like that!"
Picking a rock up and setting it aside she wondered where on Pern a firelizard would lay her eggs. The safety of rocks would be good, but also there was a need for sand to keep the eggs warm.

Huh… Mal didn’t like the sound of that and neither did Aeron. The Bronze----who really was quite intelligent, for all of his habits of getting what he wanted by shrieking or biting someone----screeched his disapproval. Of course his eggs were fine, healthy, and strong! They were not going to die.
“Yeah, yeah… you’re very lucky she’s not like that,” Mal muttered, waving one hand ineffectually at Aeron. “Ok, Aeron? Aeron. Look at me; there’s a good boy. Now… firelizard eggs. What would be a good nesting site for them? Go! Go, Aeron!”
The firelizard in question responded by, yes, shrieking. Oh, and yawning. Since he yawned in the middle of a shriek it sounded a bit like, ‘Skreeeawwwwann.’
Mal sighed and clambered up the rocks anyway, poking into some crevasses curiously.
