Hela had been having what she considered an 'okay' time adjusting to her new foster home. It hadn't been very long at all and all the people were nice (if not weird) but she found most of her problems had to do with her body. It wasn't an image problem, if anything she thought she was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Mostly she was having trouble getting around. Pavement bothered her lower half and grass was constantly pulled up under her uniquely spined tentacles.
Today was a day where she woke up and decided she didn't want to try and adjust. Not today! Today was a day where she would go somewhere that she could be comfortable and be truly herself. This of course meant that Hela ended up at the beach. It was a gorgeous day and the beach was full of families. After her last encounter with a beach going group she decided to find a patch of sand that was less populated. A short ways down from the masses, close to a rock jetty, she finally spread out a blanket and plopped down her bag (she had totally gone shopping and gotten a purse!).
Slipping into the cool tide the squid-girl finally felt at home. This time, she kept her clothes on.

"CAPDEN!" Kentucky Intrepid screeched, running along the sand and saluting fervently from a distant dune. "Puhmisshin to board?!"
Marney Intrepid, new mother and overworked shipping magnate employee sighed, looking up from her beach towel and pushing an errant strand of blonde hair from her eyes. "Granted!" she informed her daughter, going back to her book. It was nice to have some free time, she had to admit. She hardly ever got a chance to just sit down and read, and-
A crash and a spray of sand as Kentucky landed on the towel with a running leap, looking over Marney's shoulder and blinking her wide yellow eyes at the foreign squiggles. The older woman tried to ignore it, forcing herself to pay attention to what Lord Brockton was doing with Lady Finchley and why Lord Finchley didn't know about it, but she was pulled back from the narrative once more, this time by an incessant poking applied gently to the side of her face. However infrequent Marney's free time was, it was clear that she was not going to be able to use this particular outing for reading. She looked over at her daughter. "Yes, Marian?" she said patiently, closing the book wearily.
There was a pause as the girl stared at her uncomprehendingly and the guardian cursed Captain Bill Jones's sense of irony. "...Kentucky?" she amended, using the only name the girl seemed to respond to. "What do you want?"
Satisfied at being called the correct name, the toddler spoke up. "Ray-dar says sea monsder on th' sdarboard bow, Capden." she informed her mother solemnly.
Marney nodded. "That's nice, dear." she said absentmindedly. "Why don't I let you take care of it?" Kentucky's face lit up. Responsibility! "Aye aye, Capden!" she shouted, marching off to the sea. She had been assigned a task and by all means she wouldn't let the captain down!
As she approached the water though, she whimpered. The Aye-Aye girl liked boats, the ocean was quite a different story.

For the fortieth time that day, Sid stole a glance at his worn boots where they lay on the towel next to him, floppy and lifeless without his feet to prop them up. There was no way he was going to ruin them with an ocean water soak, but, well, he kind of felt naked without them.
Lex looked up from his dogeared copy of some self help book or another, his eyes hidden behind dark sunglasses. "Go on," he monotoned. "They'll be here when you get back."
Freed by the vague promise of his boots' safety, Sid stood up like a shot and lumbered out toward the ocean. He picked up speed as he approached the water, passing a few feet from the floofy Kentucky and launching himself at the shallow ebbing waves. The boy screamed, "CANNONBALLLLL!" as he flew through the air, landing in a decidedly un-cannonbally bellyflop moments later. The tide quickly carried him back to shore, where he sat giggling and rubbing his skinny chest. That was fun and it hurt all at the same time!

Hela revelled in the cool comfort of the water. Everything was much easier and clearer once she got herself submerged. Her eyesight was keen and her unique body had none of the problems with movement that the land afforded her. She came up from under the surf, pushing her white hair back against her head. In the sunlight the glowing dots on her body appeared only to be white without threat or darkness.
Hela's attention first went to the strange boy who cannonballed into the water. She couldn't help and laugh at him a bit but she was intrigued by his strange appearance. He wasn't exactly her age but she couldn't help being drawn to him. She swam closer in, rising upright once she got to the shallows, and indeed she did probably appear like a sea monster. It was only then she also became aware of the girl who seemed scared of the water.
"Don't be scared!" She just spoke aloud for both children to hear. She didn't want them afraid of the water... or her. As a sign of faith she gave both the odd looking children a warm smile and a wave of her hand, resting them then on her rolling hips.

Kentucky's eyes darted to the other creature who made a less-than-graceful entry into the ocean, and then at the sea monster. She had waited too long, and now there were two, a sea serpent and a sea witch! Lip quivering slightly, because that was really very scary, she stepped tentatively forward to follow Captain's orders and vanquish them.
The sea witch seemed ready to greet her however, and this made Kentucky falter. That didn't seem right, did it? Shouldn't she be cackling evilly and summoning some kind of storm? Kentucky felt she should consult Captain, but didn't fancy coming back unsuccessful either. She stood there on the beach instead, huge yellow eyes as wide as they could go and looking terrified to boot. Finally, she reached out with her long fingers and poked one in the water.
"Yeep!"
She looked over at the sea serpent. He was on shore still, maybe she should deal with him first! Rushing over before he could escape, she leaned over him politely. "Esscuse me, c'n I vanquish you?"
She considered the phrase, then added a "Please?" as an afterthought.

Sid looked up at Hela's words, wiggling his toes in the wet sand as he smiled a sharp-toothed smile. Cool! A mer...thing! He raised a hand to wave at the squid girl but was distracted as Kentucky approached.
Could she do what now? Sid pursed his lips in thought, then said, "Sure! So long as it doesn't hurt too bad. Lemme get up." He stood, raising his arms slightly in a lazy impression of the Vitruvian Man and sneaking another glance at Hela before looking down at Kentucky. "I'm ready for the vanquish," he announced.

Hela waved back to him and moved in closer to the beach. She was close enough to hear the little girl's adorable question and it made Hela giggle just a little bit.
The teen adjusted her top and slid up onto the sand. Her odd tentacles made deep dragging cuts into the sand as she moved, but to sit down she sort of lowered, tentacles flowering out around her, until she could fall back against what would be considered her backside. Once she was finally sitting, her bottom half flexed and squirmed in the warm sun, just as someone would stretch their legs or wiggle their toes.
Hela focused on the two children, intent on watching this vanquishing!
