I have an ancient grape vine at the house I've recently moved into. The grapes look pretty good, but the problem is the grapes are rotting before they can ripe! Thoes that are green are rock hard.

I think it's a water problem, but I just wanted to see if anyone else had this problem. Then again, it's a really old grape vine . . .

He's some pictures:

That's a really strange problem. Are you sure they're rotten? Looks to me like the exact kind of grape vine my grandfather has, his start out green and hard then turn purple as they mature.

I can understand them being green and hard, but half brown and soft? It's really odd . . .

It looks to be fungal.. (judging by the leaves in the first picture)

You mentioned the grapevines are old. Have they been pruned since you moved? increasing air circulation might help. Grapes produce fruit on new growth so you cut back the vines each year to help encourage that.

Most of what I'm coming across says you'd need to invest in fungicide and make sure the developing clusters are thoroughly covered. neutral

Research more by searching for "black rot" and grapes.

They look like my aunts grapes. her grapes turn a dark purple, blue and become very soft when ripe. My aunt makes her own wine with it. Find out what type of grapes you have?

I would just prune it up a bit. It looks like a really good plant though, it takes awhile for grapes vines to get big like that. Good luck.
