Merik sure went on a lot. Bachi had a tiny smile on his face over that. It was amusing how smitten he was with the idea of dragons. Okay, so Bachi was too, but he prided himself in being able to keep a cool, calm demeanor over the matter.
Except, of course, when Merik said he and his brother looked related. "What do you mean? We look absolutely nothing alike. We certainly don't act anything alike." His look was of scrutiny. He didn't look like Balin, did he? I mean. . . maybe they had a similar nose or something, no way did they look alike. That was ridiculous.
At this moment, however, he wished that Balin were here. He was the type of man who could make sense of this situation. Bachi wasn't sure what L'thor was talking about, and the way his teeth ground after made Bachi a little uneasy. He crossed his arms a little tighter and looked between the two riders with unease. They weren't at all what he'd thought a rider would be like.
When R'than adressed him, however, he nodded and let a light smile hit his face. "I most certainly am, sir," he answered R'than's comment on hatchling dodging. "If I see anyone else in danger, I shall do my best to help them out, too."
Maybe Merik here might need some.

Merik rubbed behind his ear at L'thor's remark, trying without much success to makes sens of it. Probably just a complaint about the poor state of things... but was that really the Weyrleaders' fault? It seemed more like stingy Lord Holders, or the overcrowding, which couldn't really be helped. He didn't really know what to say to L'thor- the boy felt a little embarrassed going on about Garith in the presence of another Rider. But he didn't mind, right? Under-appreciated Greenriders... probably got it all the time. "Well, I suppose it's just instinct- I'd never want a Bronze, lovely as they are to see, and it's natural to adore the closest thing. Oh, but he really is amazing." He nodded, though that probably just muddled things worse. Merik wasn't the best at delicate situations. "I'm honestly kind of ashamed such sad herdbeasts even exist. It'll get better, I don't doubt, but it's a shame now." And then the Hatching! He'd been told he was a late arrival, that the eggs were already hard on the sand. It could be any day! His heart fluttered a little at the mention, and he gave a lopsided sort of smile. "Oh, sir, you have no idea. Well, no, I guess you do. But I am very excited." He nodded emphatically. "I probably would've arrived after the touching, even if there had been one. Though... I was under the impression you didn't want to act afraid of Hatchlings? Wouldn't trying to dodge them drive them away, sir?" To much to soak in, all these Candidate instructions. First they tell him to be happy, then to be scared, and to always be on his toes, and to wear... what did he wear, again?
He didn't really give R'than time to answer before turning to reply to Bachi. "Well, you..." He squinted a little. "The ears. You have the same ears," he said very matter-of-factly after a moment. "But you're right, you're much louder than him. I don't think I ever got more than a couple grunts out of that man," he laughed, clapping Bachi on the shoulder and failing to realize the boy didn't enjoy being compared to his brother.

Never want a bronze, just the closest thing? What a little wherry-head, that made no sense at all. Probably the boy secretly did want a bronze, but didn't think he'd get one and so pretended he didn't and set his eyes on what most considered the next best thing. "Mmm," he said eventually, giving Merik a somewhat underwhelmed look, "naturally." Who'd want a big clunky thing that could hardly even pull off two loop the loops in a row? How horribly dull it would be to flap around in a more or less straight line candlemark after candlemark.
"People always said I looked like my older sister," he said after a moment, turning now to Bachi with a lopsided grin. "I didn't agree in the least, all we have in common is the pointy nose and the grey eyes but everyone still said we looked almost identical. Really very silly if you ask me."
Oh yes, now he remembered L'thor thing with people liking the bigger dragons. He supposed it must get a little tiresome, so many candidates not giving a toss about you because you didn't have a brown or a bronze, but the extent of man's venom towards bronzes just didn't make any sense. Well, nevermind him, there were candidates to talk to.
"Be aware, not afraid if you can manage it," he said with a nod. "You're right, you need to keep your mind open to them, to welcome them. By the time it's getting close to you though, if a dragonet is Yours, it will speak to you. If an angry looking hatchling is rushing towards you, getting close, and hasn't spoken to you, a neat sidestep is a good idea." He remembered one particular hatching when he'd been sure a handsome blue was coming for him, and then been knocked flat as the dragonet barged past him. It had been very embarrassing, but he'd been fortunate enough to escape with only a couple of minor scratches.

Never want a bronze? Bachi went into thought about this matter and decided that he wouldn't be so biased. Color had nothing to do with whether their personality matched you, right? Okay, so he was biased. He really did love the color of the greens.
Looking over at Merik has he continued, Bachi couldn't help but to grin again. Yes, everyone was terribly excited about the hatching, including himself. There was so much potential there, and since it would be his first, he was overly excited at the prospect.
"Ears?" he asked thereafter in disbelief. It was a shame he couldn't see his ears at the present moment, but that was such a ridiculous to be accused of. And as if to disprove Merik's point, Bachi gave a frown, a grunt and crossed his arms before returning his attention to the now speaking brown rider.
For now, he remained quiet. Merik and the other two were holding conversation all on their own.

"I..." he gave a breathy sort of laugh. "Well, I mean, his are a lot more out-there... obviously. But when your hair is behind them, yeah? You two definitely have the same ears." And that was about the only thing they had in common, it seemed. Spunky kid, this one! Certainly an improvement on the brooding, grunty thing he shared a family with. Not that Balin was mean, he just... didn't seem particularly friendly either.
"My sister has grey eyes. Well, my mother does. My sister... well, my half-sister... I don't actually know what color her eyes are. We only met once. But I think they're grey. Might be green," he chimed in, quite unaware eye color wasn't exactly the focus of the two's conversation. "But you don't really have grey eyes." He squinted a little, leaning in towards L'thor. "They're more... greyish-blueish-grey."
R'than's answer was ignored for a few more moments of intent L'thor-staring, but Merik did keep it in his mental queue of responses. He had to think it over a few times before it started to make sense- could Hatchlings be angry? Or were they all angry? What did an angry dragon even look like? Oh, red. Red eyes. But wasn't red hungry, too? They were all hungry. Charging red eyes, though, that sounded like the thing to get out of the way of. But what if it was just stumbling, clumsy, enthusiastic, starving little thing, and he tried to get away from it? He'd figure it out when he was on the sands; too much to think about now. "So, basically, stay away if they aren't talking to you?" Dragons talked in their Riders minds. Incredible to think about, even in a passing conversational mention. "Eighteen years around herdbeasts, and I've only had on bone broken by charging ones. I think-" hope "-I'll be okay." He smiled and nodded, rubbing his forearm a bit where it had fractured Turns ago. Where he thought it had, anyway. Weren't healers marvelous?

Egh. He didn't want to talk about eyes with some big dragon lover. Why couldn't somebody, just one sharding candidate, swan into the Weyr waxing poetic about how much they wanted a green? It was either bronzes, browns, or golds for girls, or they said they didn't care what colour they Impressed. In all his turns, he had only seen one or two insisting that a a green was the dragon for them.
Of course, he had been on of the ones who didn't much mind what colour they got, though of course he had known that he wouldn't Impress a bronze, and was slightly less likely than boys who liked girls to Impress a brown. Still, he hadn't come in with an abiding desire for a green... though he had loved the way they flew, he'd always loved that agility. It was just that, during his candidacy, that hadn't made them the sole object of his dreams. Green, blue, or brown would have done just fine for him. Shells, if a bronze had wanted him - even though one never would - he would have accepted it with joy.
R'than frowned thoughtfully and shrugged. "Yes, I suppose, certainly be ready to move. Still, being open - I feel - is more important than getting ready to dive aside. Scratches and broken bones will usually heal just fine, so not quite shifting in time isn't the end of the world. Of course, this clutch might turn out more volatile than is usual but as I say," he smiled at the pair, "I'm sure you'll be fine." Fairly sure at any rate. He couldn't help but worry. No touching. In all his time at this Weyr, that was a first, and not a good first in the least.

In all his short years, Bachi had never heard anything as outrageous as having the same ears as his brother. One thing was sure: Balin was never going to hear the end of it.
"They look pretty grey to me," he added to Merik's wonderful statement about 'greyish-blueish-grey'.
And, as exciting as eye colors and running from dragons was, Bachi had places to go! He hadn't been here long and he had places to go, new people to meet and a whole Weyr to explore!
"I have some things to take care of." It was a valid enough excuse as he nodded his head respectfully towards both riders before heading back in some random direction. What exciting thing would he run into next?
