How does one introduce their friends to steampunk?

I tend to google images search steampunk fashion (if they are curious how one dresses steampunk). If they are looking for a more simplistic version of the general idea of steampunk (this is an extreme generalization for the simple minded) you could tell them that steampunk is the victorian era with modern day technology-and forward- powered by steam. Of course, steampunk can also include other era's, but it is most commonly victorian-ish era.

My own technique is simply to mention movies or videogames that are/have qualities of Steampunk.

My fallback is Wild Wild West.

It's simplistic and far from all-encompassing, but I like the motivational poster. It gets the basics across quickly and it catches peoples' attentions.

thankfully my Girlfreind used to be Cyberpunk (shes more normal now) and she had already heard of steampunk back then, which helped! she loves it now!

it just sucks that there aren't that many steampunk events in England... its not as much fun to go to the London Expo in steam-gear as not everyone shares common interests in it.

that said, we are planning on going to some sort of steampunk event sometime! haha
