Welcome to Roleplay 101
In this class we'll be covering a basics of how to be a good, literate roleplayer.
We'll cover a basic overview of topics from character creation to entering a roleplay all the way to avoiding one-liners. We'll have other more in-depth classes for you to look over. But this class will help get you going.
So if you'll just pass your payments forward, we'll begin.
Oh and remember to avoid the black hole in front of the door. We try to remember to feed it, but best to be wary anyways.

The classroom door slammed opened with a deafening bang as a rather severe looking woman strode confidently into the room. Taking a swift, cursory glance at her classes suddenly fear-widened eyes, she smiled evilly and continued to her destination of her teacher's desk. Still silent, she placed two bags on her desk both as opposite ends from each other. One beautiful emerald bag that looked as though it was spun from the most beautiful and delicate silk lay delicately on the left side of the desk; where as the right side bag looked like some sort of burlap sack...that was leaking something that looked suspiciously like blood.
"I'm Professor Hikari Aijuntani," the woman finally spoke while settling a pair of half-rimmed glasses to perch on her nose as her current ebony eyes stared down her students giving her an air of demonic authority. Having her snow white locks curved up in a spikey bun only added to that aura especially since her petite frame only reached a height of 63 inches.
"Everyone paid up?" she grinned, her eye-teeth pointed and her eyes sparkled as eager hands held up their reciepts suddenly eyeing the bloody sack, "Wonderful. Wonderful."
"Now just so we're clear. This is Role Play 101, a basic cursory course to help you on your way to get out of my sight. Now, for those who do well in this class," a swish of her left hand opened the beautiful emerald sack to produce a number of parchment scrolls, "Will get their certificates will enable you to enter Role Play 102, the Generators, and The Dragon's Flagon Inn.
"Anyone who doesn't pass," a right-handed flick opened the burlap sack. Sinking her hand into the sack she pulled up a severed head...still bleedying from its many holes, "Will be collected and routinely fed to our black hole."
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Wow! Talk about an entrance!
Seriously though, when you enter a role-play (RP) you want people to notice you. You want them to take you seriously and entice them to interact with you.
But here's the catch!
You're not only going to be interacting with these people inside the RP, oh no no no! You'll be talking with them outside of it as well in Out-Of-Character (OOC).
So some basic rules for in and out of the RP itself.
1. Treat others with respect. Some people can spell and others can't (like me), go easy on'em. The main thing is that you understand what they are saying.
2. Pay attention to what other posters are saying and doing. Nothing like have someone post having your character fighting demons when in your post he/she had passed out from blood loss during the conflict.
3. If your going to join a thread post on it as often as the other members do. (i know this isnt always possible) Doing this lets everyone know your still around and still interested in the thread.
4. If for whatever reason you have to leave, write yourself out or make arrangements with another member to 'carry you along' while your gone. Nothing like hualing luggage around.
5. NEVER kill another character unless you have permission to do so. Some people put alot of time and thought into creating their character.
6. HAVE FUN!.......thats the whole idea!
Make sense? Ok on to the next lesson!

That evil little smirk the students had come to fear was plastered against the professor's flawless skin again as she held up a stack of what looked to be tests of some sort, "Seems as part of my curriculum, I'm supposed to provide you with a vocbaulary lesson to help you make it through subsequent classes...and of course this one. Last semester apparently gave our black hole indigestion."
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Ok! So everyone here has heard the never ending words associated specifically with Role-Play! And some of them are real doozies! So this vocabulary lesson should really help you. Then we'll get into the harder stuff.
RP - Roleplay; a reactionary based game told in story form by many different players
IC- In Character; fairly self explanatory. This denotes a place where you stay in character to interact with others
OOC - Out of Character; self explanatory. This denotes a place where you stay out of character to interact with others
IRL - In Real Life; self explanatory. Not really an RP term so much, but you'll hear it a lot anyways
GodMod - Character type; people who can't be hit or just shrug it off.
Miss Cleos - Character type; people who use Out Of Character knowledge to get an edge
Plotline - Story; this is the basic direction your role-play will take
Summary - this is a quick overview of your Roleplay to either help people get caught up in what has happened thus far and/or to entice people to join
Auto-hit - Action; this is where a character will write in an automatic action taken against another person' character. Used mostly in battles
Puppeting - Action; this is where a character will write an action for another character to move them, speak for them, etc. Basically taking temporary control
This is a basic list, more will be added over time.

"Oh how terribly cute," the Professor sneered at her class that afternoon, "You all took the homework assignment of coming in character costume seriously."
The vastness of her once orderly and uniform class had now turned into a mass of elves, dwarves, demons, angels, cowboys, damsels, tyrants, and drunks. Though she figured that last one was more a natural state then costume.
"Oh, well I suppose it could be worse. I could be teaching the Cosplay Class down the hall," she murmured rolling her black eyes, "Pg. 264, Chapter 9 and 3/4. Character Creation. No need to talk."

So you're creating role-play character! Good for you!
Now understand most Thread Creators will provide you with a basic skeleton. Like this:
Name: Race: Gender: Eyes: Hair: Height: Clothing: Personality: Occupation: History:
Sometimes a skeleton will be less/more depending on the type of RP you'll be partaking in.
The most important thing of all - Be Original! If someone is already using the persona or a name that you want is taken, I suggest just creating your own ... it is a much better experience. So how do you create a character? Start off by deciding what race your character is. Is he/she an Elf, Animal, Man, Woman, Robot, Alien, Demon, or Sorceress? Once you have chosen that, you need a name!
You want it to have the feel of fitting in your RP environment. Bob The Elf wouldn't fit too good in a Terminator-esque RP now would it? So, if you can't think of a name, take an existing one and edit it. Sometimes you can even take the name of an ordinary item or brand name you see and tweak it to make a real name! Of course if you pass the class, you'll get acess to the world's best Role-Play Generator that can help you with names and more.
Remember, people need to be able to get your name quick. So don't make it something ridiculously long or impossible to remember.
Names aside, look at the other things you'll need for a character. Appearance, personalities, even sometimes a history of that character. You're creating an entire person to step into their shoes! Remember back to that tip, make it all approrpiate to the environment of the RP you'll partake in. And once again be original!
Everyone wants to be the beautiful/handsome, powerful, hero or anti-hero. But you have an opportunity to explore some many different types of personas, and to expand your abilities by playing different types.

Today would be a relatively easy class all things considered, which of course put the Professor in a terrible mood. She hadn't even met her personal quota to feed the black hole. At this rate she'd have to rely on last years stash of heads, which were getting harder and harder to spice up to taste fresh. Cracking her neck, she was determined to merge with her inner wickedness and make the easy lesson still fit for Hell.
"Today you won't be listening to a lecture, which I'm sure most of you are thankful for," the sudden sheering was cut short by her perfectly pointed manicured fingernails scraping across the blackboard, "stead you'll be watching a film of Roleplayers, who have subsequently mad eit through my class, giving you their advice on Quick Basics of how to Roleplay."
"So sit down, shut up, and watch the video lest I scoop out your eyeballs for not paying attention."
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Wow, um...do try to remember that she is the most qualified for teaching this class. She's produced some of the best RPers we've seen from the school. A'hem, anyways. Basics of Roleplaying!
If you have ever partaken in LITERATE ROLEPLAY, then you'll know the next statement to be truthful.
These are roleplay STORIES. They are NOT roleplay games. There are no points. There are NO WINNERS. The other posters are NOT YOUR OPPONENTS.
The RPs are role play stories, mini cyber novels that are written through the collaboration of a group of authors who each play the part of one of the characters in the story and write from that perspective. All participants must put forth a cooperative effort in the planning and production of the thread
I was once in a beginning thread where our party was ambushed on the road. One character, a beautiful elf maiden, suddenly became some sort of deadly Ninja swords woman. The next poster said that he now had an army of knights, in his pocket I assumed because there were no knights in the tale until that moment. The next poster called a pet dragon into action and the next poster declared herself a God and made time explode and everything go back to normal with a wave of her hand.
Now I ask you would you keep reading such a ridiculous story? If you find yourself in such an RP, run and don't look back. If you have written such things in an RP; Shame on you and don't ever do it again.
When everyone is trying to trump the other guy and win the battle there is no logic to the story, no rhyme or reason to the action and precious little to keep anyone's interest in reading or writing.
Had these posters cooperated and had travelers band together with swords or whatever they had available and fought off the ambush, and survived or been captured or killed; discovered why they were ambushed, or they knew why and were able to continue on, or not, these things would have made for a good story that would have captured interest and inspired the authors to continue on with the tale.
Instead the posters each tried to win the battle single handedly and you see the results. The concept of winning has no place in an RP thread.
* Treat others with respect. These are RP Stories , not Games . There is no winner, it's about cooperation and collaborative writing - not winning a competition. You are trying to get along with the other posters to create a story together, not beat them out.
* Please try to use proper punctuation and capitalization. Use a Word Document to type up your post and then run the spell check program. This will give the RP a professional feel.
* Pay attention to what other posters are saying and doing.
* NEVER kill another writer's character unless you have permission to do so.
* Keep up with the thread. It makes for a much more enjoyable time if everyone's posts keep with the current storyline(s).
* Try to keep your posts sensible, legible, organized, and clean. This is a family friendly site. Please abide by the TOS (Terms of Service) at all times.
* If you are going to leave the thread, write yourself out. Don't make the other members carry your character. Use your best judgement when taking a break from your RP's. We all take a few days away at times but if you're gone for more than a couple of weeks, then you should, for the sake of politeness, consider writing your character out of the thread. You can always write yourself back in again later on.
* Do not do anything that affects another writers' character without their permission. This is just common courtesy.
* Try to avoid wacky posts. Nothing is worse than all of a sudden being thrown into battle with Morgoth and Balrogs in the 3rd Age. (It has happened before.)
* Writing dialogue or describing actions for another character is permissable, however, keep in mind that the other character's writer might not like this. It's a good idea to ask permission before touching on other writers' characters. Some people take it very seriously, while others won't mind at all. Just use your judgement.
* Sometimes, due to a variety of reasons, it is necessary to move another character along if their writer has not posted in a while. (This is called 'carrying a character'.) Hey, Real Life happens to us all! Just don't be too drastic in actions or dialogue.
* Creating dialogue is fine, but moving other writers' characters into a new situation can be a bit touchy, it's probably a good idea to consult them. Please try to contact the person first through either the OOC/Aside thread or by e-mailing them.
* Do not post large OOC comments in the story thread. This will clutter up the story. Aside/OOC threads are there for a reason.
*A quick note about the dreaded, Auto-Hit (see your vocabulary list). This has been a debate for centuries among serious role-players, no joke. Some people like it, some people don't. Most people who don't like it can't seem to handle it responsibly and therefore see it as a bad thing and call it godmodding when it is something completely different. But if an auto-hit is used responsibily by all parties involved at the moment, it can lead to some equally wonderful posts. Remember, no one RPs the same way because everyone is different, so not everyoneis going to agree. Make sure people know where you stand on this particular subject, so everyone can compromise.
* Most of all, have fun!!!

"I daresay you're all...well most of you are happy to be out of this class," an equally evil and disturbing laugh accompanied the Professor's disturbing comment, "Fortunately, not all of you passed as you can see by my new class decorations."
The heads of several students were now hoisted on their own individual stakes with visages ranging from mild surprise to absolute horror. Though the most disturbing was the head whose facial expression had been arranged to look like it was sexually propositioning you. Quite disturbing.
"And as happy as you are to be rid of this class, trust me I am equally happy to be rid of you. Needless to say, those of you who continue your MUCH needed education in Role Play 102 will find your teacher far more lenient and less colorful than I," Professor Aijuntani's hands, which had just finished handling her new head mounts, reached into the bag of certificates which were now all glowly with a faint golden sheen.
"Combined with your certificates of completetion, whcih you'll need to show you passed this pre-resiquite course, you also have obtained entrance into the The Dragon's Flagon Inn. The resident Guild IC General Roleplay, as well as a shiney new key to unlock the libraries Generator for those of you who can't think for yourselves," her sweet congratulatory smile seemed almost more frightening then the cunning one she began the course with weeks ago.
