Chase meets Mira and he is escorted to his new home.
A library of all places... It could be worse, it could have been a deserted island or a long line at a mini mart. So why was this library so peculiar? It was filled with children... Some appeared to be in a dream like state while others were causing such quite the fuss. The white haired man at the desk greeted and thanked me for volunteering my time. To find what I came for, he said that I was to go to the back on the building. "Follow a rabbit down the hole" he says, which got me thinking that it was an actual reference to something... But I haven't dove into any real literature since college, so I just couldn't place the quote.
Some time had passed and I looked around, only to realize that I had lost my way. Pretty dumb right? Getting lost in a library, but hear me out, this place was freaking huge! And almost everywhere I looked there was a kid who wasn't willing to speak or who was staring at the cover of a book. I didn't bother them, but I did feel like they needed a hug. But then it hit me, all these kids and that white haired guy was the only one caring for them... It was a queer situation. They might have been his children, but he doesn't seem like a father. Nor do they really share any traits with him, they are just here...
But then a peculiar child came into my line of vision. He stared at me with his vivid green eyes almost accusingly. It was like he recognized me, it was so eerie. 1... 2... 3... 4... 5 whole seconds had passed. It was like we were having a staring contest, and I was about to lose. Suddenly the stare broke...White and fluffy. This kid, he had rabbit ears. "Follow a rabbit down the hole." Haha, it hit me real hard, but there was my rabbit. Clothed in a red dress shirt, a black and white pinstripe blazer, a white tie, and a gold pocket watch. Faaaancy!~
"Hey kid, what's your name?"
He didn't say a thing, so I took a step closer.
"You don't talk much?"
He took a step back, turned, and made a run for it.
"Oh...A runner, " I took off, "Greeeat..."
I swear I think I chased this kid for a good fifteen minutes before we finally stopped at the front of the building. The white haired guy only laughed when I told him what happened, he gave me a smile and pat the kid on the head. I looked at the sweet faced rabbit, he didn't even break a sweat! While I was over here breathing like an old smoker on a treadmill. The kid stared at me, "You...Were...Lost."
I fell back and laughed, did I really look that distraught when we met? He probably thought I was going to hurt him. I caught my breath, "You spoke! Now do you want to tell me your name?" He didn't say a word. The white haired guy simply said that it was my job to name the kid. I was a bit shocked to be honest so I asked him why. He sent the boy off to interact with the others. It took about thirty minutes with all my questions included until I really understood what I unknowingly volunteered my time to do. He called the rabbit back over with a whistle and I looked at the boy and got up off the floor. The Librarians story was amazing. I mean, a child from a book? With close to no memories? A-Freaking-Mazing...
"So, you don't have a name?"
The Rabbit just looked at me blankly.
"Well, seeing as I'm your guardian, you will have my last name. Hmmm," I scratched my head, "How about....Chase?"
His green eyes lit up, those cute ears perked a bit. I'll admit, it did make me smile.
"And for a middle name...Rivíer, it was my dads name!"
The boy looked a bit puzzled, but that green spark was still in his eyes, so I figured I was doing alright. The Librarian pulled out a stack of papers and I filled them out thoroughly. I didn't want to miss a thing, I've always wanted a son. And this boy was such a cute little thing...Oh god...There goes that maternal instinct...
I held my hand out to him, "Chase Rivíer Williams, it's time to go home." For a moment he only looked at my hand, his head tilted to the side and those cute ears flattened out. I was beginning to feel stupid for doing it, this isn't Hollywood, stuff like this only looks good on Television. But then, after the longest few seconds of my life, Chase put his small soft hand in my palm. It was warm and delicate. I was instantly reminded of a dandelion in the summer sun. He looked up at my face and I swear that I saw, in that split second, a small heart warming smile. And no sooner than it had registered in my head, that cute smile had faded.
"How rude of me..." The boy gave me a questioning look, "My name is Mira Williams. Call me what you like, but someday soon, I hope you'll refer to me as dad." I smiled at him and led him out the door.

When we arrived home in Vegas, adjusting was a little difficult. I didn't have an extra room, the couch was purely art deco[no good for sleeping]. The first few days were just a tad awkward. At some points I really felt like I was talking to myself. Every now and again he would respond, but nothing more than a few lines. During the day I took him to work with me, granted he didn't like the party side of my job too much, "It's too loud here..." He wasn't very fond of the people either. He clung to me like glue and when the women went to touch him, he sprang onto my back and hid his face in my ponytail. The women just giggled and commented on how cute he was. At night, he slept under me, I didn't move around too much though, I didn't want to wake the little guy.
It was feeding him that was the hard part. I learned early on that his rabbit nature wasn't stereotypical. Chase truly detested carrots but he had an unyielding love for marshmallow peeps. For two days that's all he would eat, until I took him out on the town. I figured the easiest way to find out what he eats is to surround him with food. Let's just say that night I saw something remarkable...And scary...That night slept really close to me. I figured that was his way of saying Thank you, it was too cute.
After about a month we moved into a bigger apartment. Chase never did take to the idea of having his own room; He would spend the day in there if I left him at home, but at night he slept with me. It's still like this mind you. The little guy still claims the left side of my bed as his own. When I have women come over, he stares at them from my bedroom until they leave. Chase even went so far as to say, "I don't think...I like you with dad very much..." Soon after that the girl left, and to be honest, I was more proud of him than upset that she left. I mean, it's not like I could get him to say "Dad" very often. So I was beaming every time he did say it, even if it was a tactical move to get women to leave...
Besides that, his day to day tendencies were almost like clockwork. He would tidy up whatever he could and stare at the clocks in the house the first five minutes of every hour. And now that I think about it, he does still do these things.
I'm really glad I brought him home that day, even with all his silence and blank stares, he brightens up everything.
