I'm new to the World of Darkness, and am wondering if Promethean are steampunk? To those who do not know what a Promethean is, its a being brought to life through alchemy and among other things, along with the vessel created from one to several corpses, and yes Frankenstein's monster is a Promethean in the nWoD.They are not truly alive but most seek to become mortal. The source of their life force is Divine Fire, also called Pyro's which also fuels their abilities called transmutations.

So what do my fellow steampunks think?

P.S. to the mods, I didnt know really where to put this since it is science and magic based in a real world setting. If you move it please PM me so I know.
Thank you!

Nah. Aside from the DYI look of Frankenstein, I don't think it's Steampunk.

Prometheus was the titan who was stole the Divine fire from mount Olympus and gave it to man.Man then was able to advance forward and expand.

Prometheans are created by the few who knew the knowledge of how to create the first of a Lineage.Frankensteins monster is the latest of the Promethean lines. There are 5 total lineages in the core rule book. All of them have a form of orgin myth. All of them use alchemy in the assembly of the corpse to act as a vessel for the Divine Fire.Theyre abilities are alchemy based also, they're Transmutations and also use the divine fire as its power source.Their goal is to become mortal through creating more of their kind. After the first of a lineage is created they create more of their kind slowly through the centuries.

"Lead into Gold, and Pyro's into a Soul," best describes it.

If you look at the link it has pretty much all the info on the Prometheans and all of their kind.

oh right, it's an RPG. i thought you were talking about some obscure mythology (a real myth, like prometheus and the Divine fire)

wonder what i was thinking of then... i still have this image of Grecian Gladiators...

well, Prometheus is the reason Prometheans can be created. He gave the Divine fire to man.

and yeah its a rpg that can basiclly be put in any time era.

useful, but not technically a myth itself, just expanded from a myth...

anyway, no, i wouldn't say prometheans are steampunk in their own right, however, from the freedom of genre you have described, you could very well design some highly augmented prometheans, which, if you make them visibly steampunk, easily qualify for it.

i must thankyou by the way, as i have a fascination with the past, and i have a good knowledge of numerous Grecian myths, the Roman Empires, the Egyptians, and the Victorian era, but you have inspired me to begin reading ancient myths again, and i have been at a loss as to what to read recently.

Im working on creating a lineage that is steampunk. Most of its body is built from corpses, while others parts are mechanical in nature((arms, legs, other limbs, etc.)).In its chest is a furnace, that holds the Divine Flame. When it creates more of its kind it takes a piece of tinder from its furnace and places it inside his progeny, and goes on with the ritual and alchemical processes. There is a chance that the creation, will fail and become a Pandoran, a creature that is given life by Flux that is the opposite of the Pyro's and feeds off it.I picture the Pandorans, will be more mechanical then their creator, and their flesh will fuse with the metal and become partially metalic.Maybe even a few transmutations that allow the absorption of metal and other material's.

I don't think it's steampunk.

not steampunk but I do like the idea of making an automaton of clockwork or even steamworks type... though there's usually a gimmick to the flesh that has to be harvested to piece the human aspect together... imperfections, perfections, asymmetry, type of death, ect

Depends on what kind you create.Sometimes you can use a full corpse that is sutible for your need, if parts are missing go out and collect additions to the body. There is a chance that a Promethean built from more then one body such as the Frankenstein lineage, will have problems with new limbs rejecting the new host.though most Lineages dont have that problem. The only thing that you have to worry is the state the corpses you use.

Not steampunk per se, but I don't think such a thing would be entirely out of place in a steampunk story.

Okay Bad Example

The thing with the tinder box reminds me of the Automa, a race of sentient automatons I am designing for my d20 system world. Automa are little but complicated machines without an Anima crystal to act as the creature's brain. The Automa are capable of growing the crystals, but need a shard from each progenitor's crystal to act as the "seed" for the new crystal, giving each new Automa a heritage passed down from their ancestors.
