This weekend my band did three parades in the course of twenty four hours. My BD told us to drink nothing but water in those twenty four hours, and I listened to him. Well we found out very quickly that drinking just water is bad. Shortly before we where about to go out on our third parade route I very nearly passed out, and I was NOT DEHYDRATED! I had four bottles of water in just the last four hours. For every two bottles of water please drink a bottle of Gatorade or Powerade. Drinking that much water washes all the salts and electrolytes out of your system which can be dangerous. Also if you are diabetic or hypoglycemic, please eat before your go to the parade. That was the other part of my problem. Please say hydrated and keep vital vitamens and minerals in your system while marching. Don't end up like me and end up having to ride behind you BD on the 4-wheeler and have everyone worry about you.

Too much water is bad for you.

Gatorade and stuff like that is good, you can mix it with some water if you want too.

Just don't drink anything too sugary.

you have to also be careful how much gatorade you drink too. too much sodium in there. I only ever drank water at practices and parades. Never had the problems you speak of and I"ve been doing this for 10 years

I'm also hypoglycemic, and my blood sugar was way way way too low at that point.

No I didn't have a good breakfast, but I had a really good lunch. It had just been to long since I had last eaten.

The problem isn't necessarily with the water but with the fact that stupid bottled water companies are now stripping their water of vital minerals and sodium that we lose when we sweat. Sports drinks replace those but so would water if we didn't filter so damn much. So according to my doctor, the best option available now is to drink the sports drinks or 100% fruit juice (non-sweetened) watered down a bit to stay hydrated and avoid any caffeine or things that are sugary.

And just in case no one has mentioned it (which would be an aggregations oversight on their part), make sure you're not locking your knees. That pretty much guarantees that you'll pass out at some point during a day like that.

We had a firefighter come to bandcamp last year and taught us the best ways to stay safe in desert and summer heat(Sometimes as high as 120 degrees or more). He said to drink at least one bottle of gatorade/powerade every 4-6 hours, watered down a lot, and to eat lots of bananas with our breakfast and lunch. They have potasium, which helps the body absorb the vitamins and minerals from the gator/powerade. Sports drinks also have some potassium, but bananas carry more and are really good for you anyway. Watered down sports drinks because too much sugar can make things worse, and they have a lot of uneeded sugar. Also, he said to avoid milk, because even in our bodies it can rot and make us sick.
Also, a he highly recommended drinking lots of water outside of practice too. It takes 2 hours for water to take effect on your body, though its effects are much longer. A iter of water the night before can get you to a great start early morning. Our band found that when members drank water before bed, they took much less time getting into the rythm of marching band again in the morning. Right away they were energized and hydrated.
