Has anybody here heard or seen Art Tatum? If not, you should listen to him, although his songs aren't that good, he is so incredibly skilled at the piano it will boggle your mind. I have never seen anybody play piano so smoothly, so quickly and with such a good left hand as well as right. If you've got access, try and get a hold of Martin Scorsese's film on Piano Blues, it's got some footage of Art Tatum that's not much, but it's such a pleasure and such a pain to watch him.

Did you know he was blind in one eye? His main influence was from Fats Waller if you listen to some of his songs you can hear the influence in his left hand. He was also a big infuence to guys like Herbie Hancock and Bud Powell.

Yeah, and apparently he only had partial vision in the other eye. I heard a good quote...'Fats Waller was playing in a bar and Art Tatum walked in to play. Fats stood up and said: "Ladies and gentlemen, I only play the piano, but tonight God is in the house". What a compliment! Yeah, Art apparetly started out mimicing Fats' stride style of playing. Well, not mimicing, but he was influenced by it.
