urgh... confusing title, haha (i thought of cogs when i read the title, not clothes)

i go for somewhere between the stereotypical steampunk look and a western cowboy myself. in other words, shirt, waistcoat, brown trousers, a Stetson hat, monogoggle, and pocket watch. if im RP'ing in real life, i also carry a fake Flintlock pistol with me.

most can be bought at thrift shops (your best freind) or Matalan if your english. as for the Mono-Goggle, i have a thread in the DIY subforum (sorry, cant remember the actual subforum name) where i explain how i made it. (incidentally, if your looking for inspiration and instructions, the DIY subforum is the best place to go here)

Well, first off, this probably belongs more in fashion or factory...but I guess it's a bit of a split, so whatever. Personally, I take what I can get. There's a local shop that gets great vests in for only $.50, so I like to pick up old clothes there. I got a broken pair of goggle around the house I wanna ask my roommates to let me fix up and mod. Just whatever. I do it piecemeal and see how I can combine things. biggrin

Places like Goodwill, Flea Markets, and Thrift stores are good for starters. Once you get into it, you should Mod/Dye your own gear to get the desired effects.

I haven't made much myself, but you can find scrap leather for cheap at Amazon.com, and that works great for goggle straps. $6 gets you enough leather to make 10 or more pairs of goggles, unless you're using leather on the eyecups, then maybe 5 pairs max.

It also never hurts to have a can of bronze spray paint and copper spray paint handy at all times.

Most of the good DIY steampunk stuff builds off of existing items. Modifying a vest, or adding to a store-bought pair of goggles, for example. Only the hardcore people (can) make things from scratch. For that, you can check Threadbangers for ideas (they even had a steampunk stint of their own), as well as Instructables, or even just YouTube.
