Yes.
It is a social science. But if you're looking to what brings people, it would take some a math equation added with human behavior studies to explain it.

I wouldn't use the word science, but what works is popularity, attraction, interest, and advertising. All of those have worked in the past.

I want to know why people join guilds then never post. I browsed through the guild members (I panicked thinking I'd been banned from the guild or that there was a Gaia glitch after this guild moved to a second page of the "my guilds" menu - Don't I feel silly) and I noticed a ton of guild members listed with zero posts. Are they hoping to gain prestige, boost their resume, attract romantic partners, or what by belonging to a guild and making no posts?! Bizarre and ridiculous is what it is.

Not necessarily. I often join an interesting guild, only to find no interesting topics or have more pressing matters urn up. Perhaps this is the main reason for such a thing?
