TOKYO (Reuters) - Sony Corp is considering developing a cellphone-game gear hybrid in a bid to better compete with Apple Inc's highly popular iPod and iPhone, the Nikkei business daily said on Saturday.

The Japanese electronics and entertainment conglomerate launched its first Walkman three decades ago, dominating the portable music player market, but it has been running far behind the iPod and iPhone in recent years.

Sony plans to set up a project team as early as July to develop a new product that combines functions of its portable game player and Sony Ericsson's mobile phones, the Nikkei said.

Sony Ericsson is a cellphone joint venture between Sony and Sweden's Ericsson.

A growing number of game-makers including Capcom Co Ltd and Square Enix Holdings are now offering software for the iPod and iPhone to take advantage of the Apple products' popularity, posing a threat to Sony's PlayStation Portable and Nintendo Co Ltd's DS.

A Sony spokesman declined to comment on the report.

I'm kinda surprised they did not do this sooner, or make the GO out as a cell and PSP.

WELL you can do Skype on the PSP 2000+ and the 3000 and Go both have built in Mics.

Also with the Bluetooth function of the Go! it has been confirmed that if you have a BT enabled cell phone you can interact with it.

If Sony takes a hint and what Samsung has done with their P2 and P3 MP3 players you can pair your BT cell phone with it and actually take calls on the MP3 player.

Since the PSP Go! has a built in mic this would be possible.

Also Sony Ericsson is coming out with a phone (Aino) that can remote play with the PS3 just like the PSP does.

I don't see the point in game companies making senseless "upgrades" to a handheld system. A phone psp? really? that's the way of the future?? Skype is fine by me, close to a phone but not as completely useless. That's like nintendo's decision (which in my opinion is idiotic) to make the DSi. A camera instead of the GBA slot?? Were the serious?! A phone makes more sense than that but in the same range of WTF to me. Make a useful upgrade, I don't have any ideas to a useful handheld upgrade would be but seriously? They do this professionally and they were at the same loss of ideas as I am to go with a phone possibility? I know some people think it might be a good idea but I think its not. Just my opinion. ninja

A PSP phone would not be in the same "league" as the PSP gaming system per say. Think of it like the Net Yaroze or PSX. They are not meant to be in the same league as PS or PS2 they are in a league of their own.

A PSP phone would:

1.) Be most likely Asia MAYBE Europe exclusive.
2.) GSM only and if launched in America on AT&T.
3.) Sony Ericson would be making it over SCE

I have often wondered if this is nothing more then a fad, gaming on your cell, the key, as Sailorcancer said, is its not something you can concider in the same "league". Even X-play, which is not really my fav game-review show (much prefer Reviews on the Run), won't compare them or rate them against normal hand helds.

Myself, I have a phone to make calls, be a convinent calculator, and calander. Games are not my thing on cells.

I think too, on Sailors 3rd point, you would see fewer games or different games hitting it then you would see on the PSP.
