... Maybe it was just the lingering after-effects of her first jump between messing with Canthry's judgement, but she felt like someone had made a mistake.
Yes, that seemed fairly likely. Not that said mistake had effected her dramatically enough to bother mentioning, already so used to cramped accommodations and not-so-preferable roommates that she didn't even bat a lash strolling into the place. Small quarters, too many people, disgruntled, brusque, sweaty leering youth... Oh, it was just like home all over again!
Except, y'know, in the male Candidates' hall of a Weyr already bursting at the seams.
But no matter; Canth was really just so exhausted by that point that all she cared about was finding a place to kick her boots off and rest of the remainder of the evening. If push came to shove, even the floor would've been fine by her... though it seemed there were some cots (two it seemed?) stocked in the room she'd been taken to, peering around the body of the sorry rider-- some stubble-flecked fellow in his thirties-- who'd led her in.
"Well, this is it," he grunted in a rough tone, "... Alright, Canth, this will be your room. Remember it well, are we clear?"
"Yes, Sir," she replied wearily, mechanically.
"And stay out of trouble."
"Yes, Sir."
Apparently unused to such peculiar obedience, the gruff rider just blinked at her, sighed deeply, shot a look at the room's seemingly sole occupant, and gave up. "Alright then. Go and get settled."
"Yes, Sir."
"..." With that last odd face he was gone, leaving Canthry to just stand there in the little archway-- almost as if dazed-- to survey the place more properly before stepping in.
Surely, the worst of the day was already over and she was on a downward slope now... right?
Right?

Goran was already tired from having a long day. He didn't mind the chores the Candidatemaster threw their way because it gave him something to do while his thoughts rolled over and over those eggs on the sands. No Touching, he'd heard--something about one of the Candidates sneaking out and touching the still soft eggs. Apparently it could damage them, and the Jr. Weyrwoman had flown into an understandable rage. He'd never been one for keeping up with news, even important news, but now that he focused on the dragons as a whole, he was allowed to grumble and sulk about it like every other Candidate. So, what better way to distract himself than with work?
The voices he could hear outside were ignored, because as far as he knew, they had nothing to do with him. Boys wandered up and down the barracks as they pleased until they were required to sleep... but when the man that the rider was talking to stepped inside the room, Goran sat up with a look ugly enough to make most people turn around. Seriously? Another roommate? There were only two cots; the one he was sitting on, and the one that Fenferari used. As far as he was concerned, this guy was out of luck.
He'd been lucky to escape most of the crowding of the Weyr until now. Now, his lip slightly curled, Goran kept narrowed eyes on the newcomer, not in the mood to simply dismiss and ignore like he'd done with 'Rari. He didn't have a thing to say, either, all squared shoulders and flexed, threatening muscle. Wouldn't bother him any if he managed to silently convince this boy to ask for another room.

Well, it seemed as if her appearance had stirred the hackles of the room's lone occupant! There was a surprise!
... Except, y'know, not.
Less than pleasant treatment was all old hat to Canth, and she didn't even flinch at the sight of it. As far as she was concerned, it would've just wasted energy (a precious resource at the moment) to show any unease... and there wasn't a lot there to start with, if any. Nope, she just broke eye contact with him, shrugged lightly, slouched her own broad shoulders, and slunk over to deposit her lone bag in a corner NOT near him to rifle through.
"I guess we're barrackmates now," she offered wearily, now COMPLETELY preoccupied with sifting through her meager possessions. It was a gesture she thought nothing of-- but it looked like dismissing him entirely to the rest of the world. "... The rider said your name was... Goran, right?"

The other dropped his gaze, earning a gruff noise from the big man as though he figured as much. He didn't want to shake hands and make nice, especially not right now. A thick brow hefted slowly at the simple statement, but he only ground his teeth together thoughtfully as though weighing the significance of what that meant. And the fact that he knew his name.
"Who're you?" The rumble was slow and unamused. He didn't like not knowing names--especially when this stranger already knew about him. He didn't like how the other was ignoring him, picking through whatever he'd brought with him.
He knew it was illegal to hit a dragonrider... but if this guy was in here with them, that meant he was a Candidate. And if he pushed his luck much more, Goran wasn't going to care too much about manners.

Good thing Canth hadn't been expecting any friendly handshakes (the strange male would've probably tried crushing her fingers) either, but no matter; it didn't take any skin off her nose! Seemingly oblivious to the quiet seething, she just continued to rifle through her things, wearily unpacking the bag's meager contents just to make certain nothing had been forgotten.
A few necessary clothing articles, some small unknowns wrapped in cloth, what appeared to be a small joint-bladed paring knife... Yes, that was about the extent of it, and nothing seemed to be missing.
"Hmm?" Only when she heard that rumble SCREAMING of disgruntlement did she finally look over her shoulder, obviously less than impressed (or just tired, but no one else knew that).
"Oh... I'm Canthry. From Ista Hold." As if the latter wasn't obvious considering how her clothes still reeked of the ocean.
Aaand after that, it was right back to sorting her few things. Because apparently, they were far more concerning to her than a giant angry teenage male brooding within spitting distance.

Chores had gone unnecessarily long today, and Fenferari was quite exhausted. He was hardly ever annoyed or angry, per say, but he was a little... exasperated. Some fools had been loafing around during duties today and, not being of a particular mind to berate them, 'rari simply took on their share. Really, those other boys should be ashamed of themselves. With this sickness going around they needed every hale body to be at work for the betterment of the Weyr. He was holding his tongue for now, but he had noticed the slackers, and if their behavior did not improve perhaps they could seek a little inspiration from the Candidatemaster...
Fenferari entered their room with a barely contained sigh, shaking his ebon hair from his face. With sweat slicking through the strands, he looked rather oily. But he was triumphant from doing a day's honest work. He began to get a greeting out for Goran when his mirror gray eyes came to rest on the new addition to the room. A stranger stood in their midsts, and near 'rari's bed too! His mouth shut, lips drawing thin a moment in thought.
"Good evening, Goran." He started, although from the looks of it Goran was NOT having a very pleasant time at all. Part of him wanted to sympathize with the stranger for having to deal with the other male's temper, but another part of him was wondering just what this person had done to piss Goran off. As always, the healer apprentice opted for being polite.
"I see we have a visitor. Hello. My name is Fenferari." He spoke to the girl's back, coming to hover politely behind her.

...What was with that look that this guy was giving him? "You got something to say?" Goran ventured slowly, as if he was a little too dumb to realize that the other was obviously giving him some lip. He lurched from his cot to grasp at his full height, clearly relying on the menacing set of his shoulders to suggest that he wasn't playing around. Canthry, Ista Hold. Well, he'd see how well Canthry would do with a fist in his face and--
Before his mind could command his fingers to curl aggressively, a familiar figure ducked into the room. Arching a brow with surprise, narrow eyes wandered over Fenferari for a moment before he grunted a little. He was too agitated to say a proper hello, but at least they were on decent, if somewhat awkward speaking terms.
"New roommate." He announced with a growl, and his harsh stare was now pinned on the other boy. Clearly, he was waiting to see how 'Rari reacted to this dimglow. Knowing him, he wouldn't say a damn thing. The thought didn't help his mood any, and with a unintelligible mutter to himself, Goran sat down once more.

Oh, well, it looked as if there had already been a second body to occupy the second cot in the room after all-- which meant she would most likely be making her sleeping quarters on the floor, for now. It didn't bother her in the slightest, however; in fact, Fenferari's appearance barely seemed to register in her body language at all, and it was only when she turned to greet him that she proved she'd noticed.
Even Goran's challenge had gone completely unheard thanks to the new distraction... or ignored, maybe. It was impossible to tell with such a master of the stoic.
"Hello, Fenferari," she greeted the smaller boy right back, a little mechanically, though not in any semblance of harshness. "... My name is Canthry. I arrived today from Ista."
Her status as a roommate had already been explained (and oh so kindly!) by Goran, so she didn't need to repeat that, either. "Good to meet you both, I suppose... I'll try not step on your things while I'm here."
Could anything faze her? Anything at ALL?
"Do both of you have some designated space in here outside your cots, or?..."
From her question, it didn't seem like it.

"New roommate?" Fenferari parroted, staring at Goran as if he'd just been told that the cure for the flu was to suck on coriander seeds. His eyebrows synched a little closer, "But--"
He looked back to Canthry as she spoke to him, his incredulous expression schooling itself into a more polite display of interest. His eyes were stormy with worry, but he did not seem unkind. "Lovely to meet you, Canthry. I hope your flight was an untraumatic one." He cleared his throat, not really sure what he should do at this point. His gaze lowered to observe the candidate's stature and form, pausing particularly long upon the feet and hands. Perhaps he should just keep his mouth shut like he usually did- it was easier when one simply submitted this way. But it just wasn't right.
"Excuse me, I'm not usually so blunt, but I am a bit confused. You are a female, and this is the... boy's barracks. Are the female quarters full?" His tone was a bit meek.

Just peachy. He could already see how these two were going to get along already, and was shaking his head. Yeah, Canthry could have a damn corner all to himself, as far as Goran was concerned. Rolling his shoulders aggressively at the look Fenferari shot him, he was clearly not amused with both being ignored and thought of as stupid.
Of course, then his first roommate dropped a bomb that had Goran gaping like a fish. Female...
A pause.
...Female? As in a woman? As in...Canthry? Goran was just staring now, his arms hanging loosely and his shoulders slumped in absolute disbelief. He might have tried to talk, but nothing wanted to come out.
....
What the shards was going on here?!

Oh, shells, it seemed the cat was out of the bag! ... Except that there had really been no bag to begin with and, quite frankly, no cat either, as Canth didn't so much as bat a lash, merely sighed, deeply, quietly, and shrugged.
"I was getting that feeling..." The first part was mumbled more to herself than anything, lips tight in what could have been a grimace, but then she forced it all away and simply rested her back against the wall of her new 'corner', perhaps to rest her feet, which were secretly very, very tired.
"I was just sorted here," she stated plainly, for lack of any better or more earnest explanation. Shouldn't a 'normal' female candidate have been sounding more... distraught about it than she did? "... I guess someone just made a mistake. They'll probably fix it sooner or later."
... Which meant that-- ... wait, she wasn't planning on going to fix it herself?! To Canth there was no point; issues were always worked out eventually and, quite frankly, tonight she was too tired to care for gender formality. In fact, it was only when she finally looked back to the utterly dumbfounded Goran that something seemed to click.
"... Is my staying here a problem for you?"

"Well, it's just... a little bit odd, isn't it?" The apprentice medic offered, Canthry's question causing his cheeks to flush a little with embarrassment and distress. No! No, he wasn't trying to suggest that he didn't like her or anything like that. He didn't even know her! And now he felt a little bit guilty, which may or may not have been her intention.
He glanced to Goran, trying to look for some support in that department only to bite the inside of his cheek. See, Fenferari had begun to rate Goran's mood on a scale of grumpiness, as it was often the only thing he saw of the other boy. If it was a good day, he just seemed grunty, would maybe be up for some talking. And then the worst level on the scale was violence, of course. This current reaction was off the chart. It was not funny, but by the first egg, he wanted to smile. Because he preferred his nose straight and thought he would rather like to keep his teeth in his head, he did not. Canthry was nearly commendable. Almost.
Taking in a slow breath and sighing it out, 'rari seemed to become an entirely different person. His stoicism was nearly enough to rival their resident female's, face a mask of calm. He gestured to his bed, keeping his eyes on Canth as he gave her a polite smile. "Please, take the bed. Just don't mind my things; I'll move them in a moment." And certain that she would do as he said -she would be stupid not to- he stepped a little closer to Goran. Though he did not arch his brows, his expression was asking a silent question to the other male.

Right. It seemed that the best course of action was just to shut up and stare, letting 'Rari take the reins to this particular conversation... because Goran couldn't even form proper sentences at the moment. He wasn't very good at switching emotional states, and anger was still roiling around now that it'd been cheated of the chance to relieve itself with a well-aimed punch.
It was easier to ignore Canthry and focus on the only other male in this room, because since Canthry's gender had now been revealed... Goran couldn't hit her. It'd been a lesson instilled in him from day one that boys didn't hit girls. Without good reason, of course. He'd added that last bit on himself. But Canthry hadn't... done anything to deserve being hit. Had she been a guy? Well, now this was starting to make his head hurt, and he almost growled when he realized what Fenferari had just done. Given up his cot for her? And then he sidled on up to stare at him!
Goran knew what was going on, and it was enough to make him bristle all over again. Now that it had been completely rubbed in that he'd nearly gone off the handle, and now that 'Rari had made it so he looked like an absolute wherry about the whole situation, the big man was pretty close to snapping. No, 'Rari wouldn't get to play hero in this situation, and, with a growl still on his lips, Goran reached out to roughly shove the other onto his own cot.
Muttering unintelligibly under his breath, he stalked off to a corner of the room and threw himself down with more force than was necessary. Yes, he'd sleep on the sharding floor.
His bad mood had just gotten noticeably worse.

Whoa, whoa, whoa hold that thought-- just what on Pern was Fenferari doing now? It had been strange enough in her mind that he seemed to take the accommodations so seriously without explanation, but now he was offering up his cot to her, and it was nothing short of baffling.
"Really, it's not--" she'd began to say, but was abruptly cut off when Goran (again, seemingly WITHOUT a reason) stormed up to SHOVE his weaker roommate back into his cot by force before storming off to park his hide in an empty corner.
... In one part of her, she understood what they were doing now, but in another part it still didn't make a lick of sense to her and, quite frankly, with her increasing exhaustion, she was getting too tired to deal with any more of it.
"Thanks, but... I'm fine on the floor, really." It was to both of them, actually, and with that, she just grabbed her bag, dragged it lamely over to yet ANOTHER corner (the one farthest from Goran, as he seemed to ooze an aura of complete anti-socialness), flop herself down... and lean back against it like a pillow, pulling out one of those cloth-covered somethings and the short blade to... do... something while she reclined back for pre-bed meditation.
Really, why were these people making a fuss over her so suddenly? She'd never gotten anything close to gender-sensitive treatment at home, but it seemed like all the male candidates firmly believed in cooties.
She'd make sure not to contaminate their cots with it, at the very least.
