Just inside the performance hall is a tea room. Usually filled with nobility and imperial guests before a show, it is otherwise empty save for the odd visitor from time to time.

Pulling a water filled bucket with her, Soya huffed as strands of her long, brown hair hung in her face. Dropping the bucket violently to the floor and causing it to somewhat spill some remnants of water onto the ground below, Soya unloosened her hair and let it fall straight. Grabbing the bushel that had decided to block her view, the maid violently thrust it back so she can tie it correctly. After some moments of struggling with the band, Soya nodded her head in satisfaction. All done.

Before Soya reached down into the bucket to obtain her rag for cleaning, her eyes laced over the details of the room. "So this is the tea room. . ." she thought to herself, mildly amazed by its appearance. She had never seen one so detailed before. In truth, she has never seen once at all. As her grey gaze danced over the attributes of the room, she hesitated. Pulling out a small item, which looked to be like a piece of gravel, Soya kissed it gently and stuck it back into the fibers of her robe. "Protect me mother. she mumbled to herself as she eased a foot forward, her superstitious thoughts getting the better of her.

Atsuko bit her lip as she lugged her own water bucket, grasping the handle with both hands as she stumbled towards the tea room. Really, sometimes she wondered how anyone could expect for a young girl to spend her days doing nothing but chores but...well. Whatever it took to become a shirabyoshi. She had to admit that she loved the idea, and after that conversation with her "onii-sama", she was all the more determined.

As she reached the room, the girl emitted a loud sigh of relief, sliding open the door. She froze when she realized there was another figure already inside. Another maid? Had they assigned them to work together, or had they made a mistake?

Regardless of what happened, Atsuko smiled. Well, two people were better than one. They could probably finish faster if they worked together, and she didn't oppose the idea of meeting someone new. She had to have some friends closer to her age, after all.

"Hello," She greeted, standing a few feet away from the other maid, "I'm Atsuko. I suppose we'll be working together today."

Soya jumped from the sudden voice, turning around in a quick rotation with the gravel piece stuck out in front of her. She closed her eyes shut, not wanting to see the monster. After nothing happened for several moments, Soya blinked her eyes back to reality. There was no spirit, no bloodthirsty yokai wanting to steal her soul. It was a mere maid, who looked to be about the same age as her.

Giving a quaint nod of her head, Soya smiled. "I'm Soya, nice to meet you...What was your name again?" she asked, taking more steps closer as she had not heard her the first time. Inwardly, Soya felt horrible. She disliked the disability she had of not being able to hear properly. She hoped she had not annoyed the other maid in asking again. Most people scolded her for not hearing correctly and she was not fond of it at all.

The girl smiled, lowering her bucket to the floor so that she could give a proper bow to the other maid. "I'm Atsuko," She repeated with a grin, "It's nice to meet you, Soya-chan." Picking up the bucket of water, she stepped into the room, sliding the door shut behind her. Kneeling on the floor, she grabbed a wet rag from within her bucket, wringing it dry before turning to smile at Soya.

"Looks like we were both assigned to clean the same room," She commented, "It's a little unusual, isn't it? Our chores are usually supposed to be done individually but...I'm not complaining. Working together will be more fun." Atsuko had to admit that she sure was a chatty girl at times. Hopefully that wouldn't bother her new acquaintance too much.

Soya smiled, bowing her head in return. "It is rather odd." she said, tapping her lip lightly. "Maybe the superiors made a mistake? But ah well! Might as well make the best of it! I'm glad I have your company, Atsuko-san. Cleaning all days seems so boring while I am all alone. . ." she said with a smile.

Returning to her own bucket, Soya nodded her head. "Ahh, how do you spell your name out in kanji, Atsuko-san?" she asked, hoping to earn some knowledge about the scripture. Picking up the rather wet rag from the side of the bucket and wringing it out, she held it with one hand as she drew an invisible drawing in the air. "I am not sure how I write out Soya." she said as her finger darted about as if it were a calligraphy brush. "And I have been told my kanji is illegible. But I do know that Katsura is a type of tree. So I just imagine the streaks of my name to be the branches of a tree and spell it out that way. I have been scolded several times before due to trying to learn, but the real way they spell out my name seems so. . . dull. I like my way better, it is much more creative and prettier."

Smiling, Atsuko dropped her rag onto the floor, dipping her hand into the bucket of water and scooting beside Soya. "The first kanji in my name is for the word 'kind' and 'cordial'," She explained, running her finger along a dry spot on the ground. It left a wet trail, and she pulled back only when there was a neat "" visible. "The second part is just 'ko', as in 'child'." Again, she wrote out the kanji. When she was done, she leaned back was satisfication, her name - 篤子- written on the floor of the tearoom.

She turned to watch as Soya "wrote out" her name in the air, and smiled. "I think that's a really creative way to spell out your name," She agreed, "I can't do anything like that with my name. You're lucky!" She grabbed her rag again, wiping her name from the floorboards.

"I don't see why anyone would scold you for it," She added, "After all, it's your name."

Soya eyes widened with amazement. "Atsuko-san has such pretty calligraphy!" she said with a quaint smile. Turning about, Soya dipped her rag into the bucket. "Seems like adults don't like to have fun." she said as she fished the rag from out of the water and splattered it out onto the tatami mats, moving it in circular motions. "They always talk about how they wish for us to be adults, for us to grow up to be beautiful and elegant. I mean, I wish so much to become a Shirabyoshi! But. . . I also wish to fight like a samurai. It feels taboo saying it, 'cause the other maids always admire the Shirabyoshis who perform and compliment them constantly. But none of them ever seems to admire the samurai who the Shiyabyoshi perform for. . ." rambled Soya. She was mostly speaking to herself, caught up in her own little world.

Noticing her mistake, she grinned sheepishly at Atsuko, dumping her rag back into the bucket and pulling it out. "Ah, sorry." she said, her eyes upon the mats this time as she apologized. "I was rambling. Heh. . . "
