Well, I've been reading through the book Perdido Street station by China Mieville. I was rather curious if Mieville is indeed a steampunk author, and if so, please give some opinions or other recommendations of his books.

I'm inclined to say that Mieville is somewhat steampunk. Not only is he an absolutely awesome writer; he incorporates clockwork robots, a floating pirate city, golems, airships, railroads, and other such things as important elements of his Bas-Lag novels. The gritty urban feel that he creates so well seems to me to reflect perfectly the edgier side of steampunk.

After Perdido Street Station, you should definitely read the other two Bas-Lag novels: The Scar and Iron Council. They're not really a trilogy, but they're best when read in order. I'm looking forward to The City and the City, his latest book, but as it's not set in the Bas-Lag world, I have no idea whether it will be steampunk or not.

In my humble opinion, he is one of the best. Absolutely excellent.
It helps that I read Perdido in a turn of the century train station... ^^

The only thing I've read by China Mieville is Un Lun Dun, which is entertaining but is really a rip-off of Neverwhere for children.

His other novels sound interesting, however. I may have to check for them at my local library.

I've not read Neverwhere, so I can't comment on that aspect, but I disagree that Un Lun Dun is aimed at children. Far too many political, grammatical, etc. jokes that would just go over the heads of kids.

Like you, I've only read Un Lun Dun. I started reading Perdido Street Station but I just couldn't get into it. <_<

i'll be sure to read neverwhere first, then.
