grapefruit dreams

User ImageSeiyo finished slicing the innards of the fruit, then sprinkled the top lightly with sugar before moving to retrieve a spoon from the drawer. He set everything on a plate, then made hs way slowly to the backyard, where he watched the clouds moving slowly across the sky as he dug the spoon into the 'bowl' created by the rind. The first spoonful burst in a shower of sour-sweet on his tongue, and the mix brought a smile to his face. He could remember a quote someone had once said, though the name and the face escaped him. "No wonder you like grapefruit," the person - no woman; it had been a woman - had said stridently, Her voice almost shrill to his sensitive ears. "It's just as sour as you are!"

They were words that had been flung out during a fight, but that didn't matter. Even at the time, the idea had struck him as amusing, and the laughter it had garnered earned him a handprint on his cheek, and the sight of her walking away. That day had begun his quiet hobby-c**-obsession, and his house was the result. There were two jars of grapefruit hard candy, grapefruit-smelling shower gel and cleanser. He had a nice batch of grapefruit from the store, and two huge jugs of grapefruit juice to drink. Perhaps he was as sour as the grapefruit he ate, he reflected wryly. But on the other hand, so many of the grapefruit things he ate weren't nearly as sour as they might be. So did it then hold true that perhaps he was sweeter than he seemed?

Laughing at the thought, Seiyo closed his eyes and lifted another spoonful to his lips, savoring the tang. Whatever it meant... he was going to keep right on eating his grapefruit.

If only for spite.
