Joshua had practiced swimming all of Spring, and some of summer. It wasn't very hard--but he still wasn't that good at it. He was well enough that his mother let him swim in the lake--as long as he was being watched and didn't go past his head. Or really, past his shoulders.
Thali, his mother was watching from the shore. She would have denied watching--she was only making sure her oldest didn't get hurt. She'd invested too much time and money into him to let him drown--obviously, that wasn't the real reason she was there. Her son knew it, despite her refusals.
She would always be, no matter how old he was, his paranoid mother. And he loved her for it--most of the time.

Rit's arm was finally healed enough that she didn't need a cast anymore, the pink scars and slightly withered muscles acting as the only reminder of that grisly accident, and as Vox stood by her side she could only glance over at him with a sickening feeling in her stomach.
The kelpie brat was no longer a toddler, he actually was now a child that was taller then half her body, and the change scared her. It had been overnight it seemed that he grew so quickly, his voice losing the baby-whine it possessed and replacing it with something husky for a child. His general manner had changed, going from slightly talkative to rather withdrawn, but his overall feeling was the same.
Vox terrified her.
"What are you staring at?"
The husky voice broke over Rit's ears and she turned her gaze away from Vox, who in turned had looked up at her. His face was set in a look of pure disinterest, even when Rit had told him they could go to the lake for a swim since they'd hadn't been in a very long time, but now his left eyebrow was raised in slight annoyance.
"If you've nothing to say to me, leave me alone."
The pair walked in silence then towards the lake, the air about them tense.

Joshua spotted two vaguely familar figures walking towards the lake. "Vox?" He asked, more to himself. The toddler had grown! Did that make him more dangerous? He'd never heard of kelpies growing more dangerous as they aged--but then, he didn't know much about them.
The dark skinned boy walked out of the waters to greet his friend. He hadn't seen him since Vox'd been sick. "Hi Vox, Ms. Rit." He greeted with a smile. The adult seemed nervous, and both of them had a tense air about them. The older boy decided to try and break it. "You grew, Vox." He commented. "You look nice."

Vox looked at the youth who had just approached him as he strolled to the lake, his eyes narrowed as he tried to understand the casualness of his speaking, but the Kelpie merely cracked a thin smile on his lips in response.
He was bigger now, much bigger than the last time they met. He was even taller then Joshua, probably stronger too. They were near water, this was all to his advantage, Rit wouldn't try and stop him. The terror in her eyes told him so.
"Hello Joshua. I see you are swimming today."

"Yeah." Joshua said proudly. "I've been practicing." He said. "You going to be swimming too, Vox?" He'd clearly forgotten his past wisdom about never swimming with kelpies. Maybe he thought because he could swim better, he was safer.
"Ms. Rit, my mother's over there, if you want to talk to her." He pointed to the elf. "I remember you being friends."
Thali too, had spotted the kelpie, guardian pair. She waved, and went back to watching the water.
