For my 21rst Birthday, I went to give blood. I figured if I stop by after work I could donate and be home before any of my friends arrive. Went through the whole questionnaire and got my finger pricked only to discover my Iron level is 11.7 but the minimum to give blood is 12.5 sad Usually my blood pressure is what prevents me from doing stuff like this. They always tell me, my Blood Pressure is GOOD but not high enough to give blood. This time, my Iron Level is good, not below normal or anything, but not enough to permit me to give blood.
Well my parents won't stop pestering me now, saying it's because of all this dieting I've been doing, and I need some fat on my bones and I'm too skinny. And now they're pressuring me even more to eat stake and junk food. The nurse actually said I should eat more spinach, but they just brushed it off as if I was joking. They said it would be impossible for me to eat more veggies.

Your best source of iron is chickpeas at 6.2 mg per serving, different than 4 mg per serving for spinach, it's also easier to eat many servings of chickpeas.
Seriously spinach is not the vegetarian/vegan cure all for iron, we have a hard time digesting the iron in spinach for some reason.
Chickpeas hon. (they're where it's at!)

my blood level magically rose a LOT since I began to eat healthier... I'm not sure about those numbers, we measure hemoglobin here and my number was 117 before my change of diet, and two months later when I finally got to a nurse, it was 134 or something ^^
I think it was because of a lot more meat and veggies.

My mom has this same problem when she goes to donate. Spinach is good but like Seraphosody said chickpeas are much better. If you want you can check out this webpage on how to increase the iron absorption in your body naturaly.

Good, cause I just got a 3 bean salad from my local grocery store. I'm pretty sure there's chickpeas in it....I think...I'll go check
