Here's the rest of Chapter 1. To find out what happens next, you'll have to buy the book. wink
Later that evening, Zack and Jennifer went to the movies. Zack paid for the tickets and the snacks. They went in to the movie room and watched the film. After the movie, Zack drove Jennifer back to her house. She gave Zack a quick kiss. “Thanks, Zack. I had a wonderful time.” “Except for the fight.” Zack said grimly. “Don’t be silly. You were really brave.” “Jacob just makes me so mad! He thinks he can get away with anything just because he’s the mayor’s son.” “Why do you pick fights with him anyway?” “He started it. Besides, I didn’t want to lose you to his thugs.” Zack kissed her. “I’ll see you tomorrow?” “You know it!” Jennifer left the car and walked up to her front door as Zack drove home. That night, Zack told his father about the strange dream while they had dinner. “I would have seen more if I didn’t wake up. Tony thinks it could be a premonition, but I think it’s something ominous. What do you think?” “I’m sorry, son.” Leonard McFlaren said. “I have no idea what it could be. I’m as clueless as you are.” Claire noticed Zack’s face. “Honey, what happened to you? Why is your face bruised?” “It’s nothing. Jacob showed up at the fair and we had a fight.” “A fight?! Why? What happened?” “Well, it’s like this.” Zack explained the fight at the fair. “I got away with a few bruises, but Jacob is going to have a broken arm.” “You did the right thing by saving Jennifer.” Claire said. “We’re going to have to deal with Mayor Adams.” Leonard said. “He’s not going to be pleased that his son came home with a broken arm.” He put his plate into the sink and walked over to the closet. He opened it up and pulled out his hunting gear. “Do you want to go hunting with me, Zack?” “That sounds like fun! Let me go grab my gear.” Zack ran upstairs to his room. He entered it and found a small package on his bed. He opened it and held up a small amulet. This is weird. He thought. This must be from dad. The amulet was golden with a black gem in the center. He flipped it over and found a message in Latin etched into the back. He put on the amulet and grabbed his hunting equipment. He rushed outside and joined his father in the red Toyota truck. They drove off towards the forest. “How did your date go?” Leonard asked as they drove down the dark road. “It was great!” Zack said. “But the fight was awful.” “About that. Are you sure that was wise?” “Jennifer was in trouble, dad! I had to save her!” “I know, but I’m worried Mayor Adams will fire me. If I get fired, we’ll be in trouble. We can’t afford to move again.” “I’ll work things out with the mayor. I’m sure he’ll understand if I explain things to him.” Leonard patted Zack on the head. “Everything will be alright. Let’s not worry too much about it.” “Okay.” “How’s Jennifer?” “She’s okay, but she’s still probably still shaken from that attack earlier.” “She’ll be fine.” Leonard roughed up Zack’s hair. “As long as her knight in shining armor is around, she’ll be okay.” Zack grinned. “Thanks, dad.” “That’s what I’m here for. So, are you going to marry her someday?” “Dad!” “What? I was just asking.” Then, he whispered. “Besides, I want to have at least one grandkid.” “I hope to marry her someday.” “That’s good.” Zack pulled out the amulet and looked at the eye shaped object. “Dad, where did you get this?” Leonard looked at him. “That? A patient gave it to me as a thank you gift. He said it was the Amulet of Giros. He found it while he was digging in Greece. I told him I couldn’t take something so rare, but he insisted. He told me it was supposed to bring good luck.” “Thanks, dad. This means alot to me.” “You know, son. I was thinking.” “About what?” “About your dream.” “Oh yeah? What do you think?” “I don’t think it’s a premonition or an omen. I believe it happened already and you were involved in it somehow.” “But how can that be when I have never heard of these people?” “The archaeologist that gave me that amulet told me about reincarnation. Maybe you were one of the knights in a past life.” “That would be pretty interesting, but they used magic. Magic never existed at all.” “In some countries, ancient cultures would use magic to perform many services.” “I’m still confused.” “Don’t worry, son. You’ll figure it out. You’re a smart kid.” Leonard turned left onto the dirt road. “Remember, we’re going after the gamiest deer. We’ll split up when we get to the hunting grounds.” “Okay, dad.” They were silent for the remainder of the drive. They arrived at the hunting grounds an hour later. Zack and his dad got out of the truck. “Do you have your phone?” Leonard asked as he equipped his hunting gear. “Yeah.” Zack showed his phone. “It’s on.” “Good. Be careful, Zack. These woods can be dangerous at night.” “Don’t worry. There’s no bears or wolves here. I’ll be fine.” “Well, okay then. Meet me back here in a few hours. Call me if you are in any trouble.” Leonard and Zack went separate ways. Two hours later, Zack was carrying some deer back to the truck when he heard a young woman crying. He put the deer down and shouted, “Is someone there?” The woman continued to cry. He pulled out his phone and called his father. “Dad? There’s something strange going on.” “What is it? Are you hurt?” “No, I’m fine. I hear a woman crying.” “Are you sure?” “Yeah. Listen to it.” Zack put his phone in the air towards the direction of the sound. He brought it back to his ear. “Did you hear it?” “Son, I didn’t hear anything.” “What? But I can hear it loud and clear!” “It’s true. I heard nothing at all.” “That’s weird. I can definitely hear someone crying. I’m going to go check it out.” “Alright, but be careful.” “I will.” Zack hung up and put his phone away. Zack continued to hear the young woman cry. He slowly walked towards the sound. He let out a yell as he fell into a long dark pit. He quickly grabbed a root that stuck out from the side. “Damn! What’s going on?” Zack asked. “Did I fall into a trap? How am I going to get out?” He heard the root crack. “s**t.” The root broke and Zack plummeted towards the bottom. He fell unconscious as he hit several rocks. A howl erupted from all around and Zack was bathed in a red light. His brown hair was replaced by silver fur that quickly covered his body. His facial features changed from human to wolf. His hands and feet turned into paws. He grew fangs and a long furry tail. His eyes grew a deep golden color. A portal opened up beneath him and he fell through into a strange new world. The air whipped around him as he fell towards a lush green hill. Birds quickly flew away from him. He landed in front of three hooded strangers with a hard thump. The strangers walked up to him as Zack feebly opened his eyes. He saw dark clouds forming overhead. “W-Who are you?” He asked. One stranger put a cloaked hand to his mouth. “Hush, dearie.” The stranger said in a gentle female voice. “We’ll take good care of you.” She turned to the large hooded figure. “Raimool, take him to the guest house.” “Yes, Leila.” The large stranger said in a gruff voice. He picked Zack up and carried him towards a small house outside a quiet little village. Zack turned his head weakly to see a small village before blacking out.
