Where do you put your hands?
  In your pockets
At the side of your legs
Clasped in front or at your back
  EVERYWHERE! Crazy hands!

I'm an Aspie, and ever since I was little, I didn't know where to put my hands. The proof is in the pictures. Most kids don't think about it, but I tried really hard to get it right, so I would fold them in my lap, which I don't think most kids do.
Now,when I'm sitting down, I still fold them in my lap, but they never stay in the same position for very long. It's even harder now that I am trying to stop biting my fingernails AGAIN which is really hard since I've bit them down to the quick since I was three.
When I stand up, I try to either put my hands in my pockets or put them behind my back and clasp them. But they always end up being somewhere else, like twitching at my sides (I do a sort of hyper twitch with my fingers when I go off into my daydreaming world) or they just look like confused hands that don't know where to go. I don't see how people can just walk around with their hands at their sides, not thinking about it! LOL

Well I couldn't stand having to put my hands at my sides either when I was young, so I just put them in my pockets. When I went to Highschool and had to wear uniforms which had no pockets (except for one at the back) I hated it. So to get used to it I would take some things out of my backpack like my lunchbox and hold it for the entire walk to school.

Yeah, I hate not having pockets either. I don't like to hold them to my side, because I twitch my fingers when I think about something too much, and I get deep in thought a lot. My fingers get tired. I think there is a medical term for the finger twitching, called stinting... or somthing...

Oh icic,

Well I hated having no pockets in pants because it didn't feel right. Whenever I had to put my hands at my sides I would have a weird feeling inside like something is out of place. I was so used to having my hands in my pockets, that when I realised my uniform pants had none. It felt so weird and I was pretty frustrated. That's why I don't like change...

Don't feel too self conscious, everyone fidgets with their hands sometimes. It's an example of "stimming" and people do it when they're bored, nervous, etc. Human brains like patterns, they're predictable and soothing. So, when you do a repetitive behavior, it's relaxing. I tap my fingers and wiggle my feet if I'm sitting, for example. Keep your hands wherever you feel comfortable putting them, I doubt anyone will notice. And if you feel like you are fidgeting too much, find something for your hands to do. You could draw or hold something maybe.

Hope this helps! Try not to worry too much! smile

I think the easiest way to deal with your hands is to give them a job. That's what I do. Whether it's holding something or just snapping my fingers, nobody really seems to mind.

I'll agree with all the above 'nuttiness' when it comes to pocket-less pants. Drives me crazy, too.

Though, as far as the twitching goes, I rarely think of my hands because my focus is on my darn feet, knees and thighs for bouncing all the darn time. Which happens to be bothersome to everyone around me in most cases. The vehicle literally shakes and bounces with me and I've scared a few people before because they didn't realize why the idling car was moving. gonk or at any sit-down event my mother has reached over and tried to hold my legs still, which was annoying and embarrassing. Especially, since if she held one down then the other one would start. Gah!

Oh, but back on the topic of hands. Now that I think of it, I always seem to be holding onto something. I've purposely carried paperclips in my pockets so I've had something to fiddle with out of sight.

Ya know its odd how I looked into this thread and had a flashback of my childhood. I totally remember my hands twitching and twisting up whenever I got excited when I was younger. The only time I remembered it was when my mom pointed it out when I was in third grade I think. That was also when she was trying to get me to quit. It had to been a habit of mine because I remember my mom constantly reminding me about it all throughout the year until finally I resisted the urge to do it and stopped and forgot all about it.

Now I have circulation problems which swells up my fingers so I have to lift up my hands and do a prayer-like gesture just until the blood goes down. Very embarrassing when I have to do that as I walk down residential streets lol.

I usually put my hands on my stomach or inappropriate places

I have this exact problem. My arms never feel comfortable by my sides, it always makes me feel self-conscious. Whenever I'm not thinking about where I should put my hands I grab the bottom of my shirt like I'm pulling it down or I hold my hands tightly in front of my body underneath my breasts- both of these look really weird to other people.
