"I'm sorry ma'am, where was this going again?" Allende asked, reminding herself once again not to shiver as the overly large Assistant Cook Bianne leveled her with a glare. Intimidating as the woman was physically, Allende had chosen to come here, and that there was no reason to bully her into service like some weyrbred brat. Unlike the privileged weyrborn, Alle had more then enough practice sloshing dishes and mending seams. Bianne just needed to speak properly rather then growl!
"To the main dining hall girl! Rush is starting for the noon meal! Just set it on the serving table and get back here!" Bianna growled, turning back to the great stirabout kettle she was tending. Irritated and hot, Alle made a face at the woman's back and quickly exited the kitchens, tray of freshly baked meatrolls perched precariously on her thin shoulders. One blessing for her burn scarred hands, the calluses on them allowed her to grasp the heated tray firmly to keep it in place as she weaved through the gathering crowd. Predictably, a few impatient patrons grabbed a few rolls off her tray as she passed, but most were too fast for her to catch without spinning around and spilling everything. Once, she managed to chastise a young looking man with wavy brown hair and the shoulder knots of a brownrider as he slowly made a grab for one. Surprisingly, he only grinned in the face of her temper, ate the roll, and strolled off towards the kitchens himself. Bianne greeted him with a surprised look on her face at the door as she was on her way out with a tray of bowls, then handed him the tray to take out!
Startled by the odd exchange she had witnessed, Allende turned, nearly tripping over low bench.

L'thor was annoyed. People were always so pushy when it came to mealtimes! Literally pushy. He was hardly one of the shortest people in the crowd, and he was far from meek, but he was quite light and easily knocked around. As yet another idiot bumbled into him - a stocky blue rider who L'thor happened to find about ten times more annoying than a head full of lice - he decided he'd had enough.
A mere thought was enough to summon his own personal army. Two blue and two brown they popped into the air around him, chattering in annoyance. Deep blue Dusk landed on one shoulder, young Dancer dropped onto the other, and River and Rust fluttered about his head, snapping at anyone who got too close. Soon enough, L'thor found that he had space to breathe. Naturally the people who had been accosted were glaring at him, but he paid attention to them only for long enough to shoot them happy smiles. It wasn't as if he was trying to shove the the front of the throng, he was just avoiding getting trampled to death and or shoved to the back.
Now that he was no longer focused on the press of folk around him, he had attention to spare for other things, and noticed who was giving out the meatrolls. Tall and skinny, it was Allende, the girl he had searched not so long ago, much to the disgust of her father. Apparently distracted by something, the girl turned about and almost fell over a bench. Though she hadn't actually fallen, L'thor found himself elbowing people aside in order to reach her and ensure she was alright. He got there easily enough; riders might be quite keen on their food, but not quite keen enough to risk an nasty n** from an annoyed flitt.
"Allende! You doing alright there?" he asked as he drew close to her. "I bet that stack of meatrolls weighs about half as much as you do," he added with a chuckle, remembering having to carry things about for the kitchens during his candidacy without even a trace of fondness. He had been an exceptionally skinny lad; heavy work had not been his forte, to say the least. Still, Allende was a big girl, and he had no doubt she was strong despite her less than bulky build.

"Oh! L'thor!" Honestly, in the crush of people she hadn't seen him until he was right next to her. Normally that took some skill, given how many flits L'thor had... and Alle's exceptional height. "I'm alright, more or less! You wouldn't believe how impatient some folks can be!" This was directed more at the people around her, who had blessedly moved off compliments of the greenrider and his entourage. Alle was certainly not above making her displeasure known at times like these! To the Threads with propriety!
"Would you mind terribly if I asked you to help me get over to that table? I've got to deposit these before something else happens!" Hah, nor was she above asking for help! Even from a rider! Bianne just had afterall! "After that, if there is anything specific from the back that you want, I can grab it for you." She added, twisting her torso to manuever the tray out of the way of a small knot of weyrbrats swarming towards the fruit table. She'd seen some of the cooks readying some tasty morsels, most of which she didn't know the name of but could certainly describe.

L'thor rolled his eyes. "People can be very impatient; especially riders!" he shot a glare around. "Doubly so bronze riders!" he shot a rather pointed glare at a man with shiny shoulder knots. "Come on then," he grinned and nudged Dusk and Dancer to flutter back into the air, "lets' get that tray put down." The four flitts moved at L'thor's commands like a perfect little wing... well, if he was leading their wing he'd be berating them no end for sloppiness actually, but for flitts it was pretty good. Two before and two behind, three of them chattering noisily, Rust just shooting annoyed glances around, they moved towards the table without too much difficulty.
"There we are," L'thor chuckled as they arrived, "safely delivered; now these animals can climb over one another to get at the trough!" Apparently taking this as an invitation, Dusk swooped down and grabbed a meatroll off the top of the pile before vanishing to consume his prize. Rust followed him in short order -he didn't like all the noisy people here- and that conveniently enough left L'thor with enough shoulders to go around.
As Dancer and River alighted he gave Allende another grin. "Shall we get out of the way before we're trampled? I'd certainly like to hear about anything tasty they might be making up in the kitchens!" It had been a long day, and both scrubbing and oiling Raith all over had certainly worked up an appetite. For now he wanted to hear about any nice bits that were being kept back; if there was nothing in particular he could easily send River to grab him a meatroll.

Risking a broad grin at L'thor, Alle gladly followed in the greenrider's wake, marveling at the efficiency of his lizards, but more so at how casually he dealt with the weyrfolk. She'd glare and occasionally reprimand an offender if she caught them bare handed in the cookie jar so to speak, but L'thor was outright threatening people out of the way with a mere look!
Still, it was with a relieved sigh that she placed the platter on the table and scurried out of the way. Under normal circumstances she might have been scandalized by the mere thought of a firelizard taking food from a serving table, but given the current situation (and a growing understanding of the Weyr) she was more inclined to win clear the crowd and thank L'thor properly. "Sounds like a good idea, if you follow me, I can tell you about those stuffed herdbeats loins they've been preparing!" Come to think of it, she'd been craving on herself for the better part of the morning as they baked. Food was full and hearty at her home hold, but she really had to hand it to the staff here at Ista. The fry-ups when they got in a huge tithe of fish should be legendary by now, and it looked like the latest recipe from the Headwoman was going to follow suite.

L'thor's already lively grey eyes lit up further. "Roast herdbeast you say? That sounds like my kind of lunch!" Dancer and River, aware of what was going through their human's mind, agreed that they were happy they had stayed. He would, not doubt, share his food with them; even L'thor's terrible four were not brazen enough to try to steal roast herdbeast, especially if it was specially prepared!
"So how are you settling in?" L'thor asked after a moment, grinning both at Allende and at the images of food his flitts were flicking back and forth. "I see you've found a place to make yourself useful at least, that's good! When I was a candidate I had no particular skill at anything. Unskilled and skinny, I got shunted around between chores quite a lot." Being good at walking for candlemarks, persuading people to buy things, and handling runners or burden beasts a little hadn't counted for all that much. He'd tried of course, he'd tried very hard but effort could only make up for so much. If you were too scrawny to carry something, you were just too scrawny. Thankfully it hadn't taken him too long after Raith's hatching to build up enough physical power to cope with all he needed to do for her, but even today he wouldn't be anyone's first choice to fetch water or sacks of vegetables.

L'thor grinned; "Better and better!" Definitely worth getting in there before it all went. River and Dancer agreed wholeheartedly; they would like some real meat, but he could have the strange-sounding middle bit. Middle bit? Cheek! He planned to have most of it, and they would get what he gave them... of course, he'd see that they got a nice share, they didn't eat much after all, it wasn't like he'd miss what they ate much...
"It got less confusing for me eventually," L'thor said after a moment, his levity giving way to a thoughtful frown. "Such a different life, so many things to adapt to, ideals to adopt, rules to follow, things to hope for and fear and... Everything." Allende must have lived a very quite life before Raith had found her. A simple woodsman's daughter, just as he had been a mere trader's boy. Different things must seem strange to her than had to him, but he had no doubt she was experiencing some of the same confusions, doubts, and worries that he had.
"It did get easier for me over time," L'thor went on with a slight sigh, "it just took quite a long time. I was quit fortunate though, I made a good friend who'd been here for several turns, knew his way about. He helped me out as much as possible, but of course there were some things he couldn't really help with; he could tell me about them but I had to pick it up on my own." Rejection wasn't personal, that was the main thing he had struggled to accept. It had only been once, but it had hurt more than he'd thought possible at the time.

"Time hmm? I'll have to admit, it is hard to convince myself that I have all the time in the world to figure this life out. " Alle replied with a slight smile for her former naivety. "When you and Raith found me, I was practically bursting at the seams with the need to leave! I only had some vague notion of who I wanted to be, and an even vaguer plan on how to get there..." She paused, neatly avoiding a low bench that was suddenly shoved in her way by a careless rider. "...Being here though, in Ista... well... my ideals have changed a bit with the reality that the world is a pretty big place." She finished, turning to glance back at the green rider. "There is a lot I need to know if I want t reach my goals, y'know?" Which was true, the type of woman Allende hoped to be someday was a woman she could proudly peer at from across a mirror, and to be proud of herself...
Well, Allende knew she had to expand her narrow horizons and get a better grip on how Pern ticked. Science and discovery was just the tip of the iceberg! She had history to read, people to watch, behaviors to understand! Thus far she knew she had only a distant understanding of some of the more bizarre human behavioral patterns, and oddly enough, figuring out what made people tick was rapidly becoming one of her favorite topics.
"I hope you don't mind my asking you this, L'thor... but... well, about Thread..." Alle started, unaccustomed to actually speaking about the hitherto read about or whispered topic. "My last teacher did not really elaborate on it much, and quite frankly... what I have found out about it written on hides here in the Weyr obviously require some level of general education about it. Could you tell me about the placement of the Star Stones and the significance of some of the natural disasters that foretell the arrival of the Threads?" She asked suddenly, hoping the greenrider would be up to such questioning.

Thread. It still hadn't come. He was still waiting for it, and he'd wait for as long as it took. It would come, and he and Raith would fight it, they'd fight it for two. His green no longer remembered D'los or Seerinth unless he reminded her, but her determination to do doubly well against the silver menace remained. Currently however she was sleeping, and thankfully his thoughts did not disturb her dreams.
"You will get there," L'thor assured her with a smile, "I have faith in you, and I'm happy to help you out with anything you need to get there... So then, Thread and star stones to start with. Humm. Well." L'thor frowned thoughtfully, trying to work out where to begin; he was no natural teacher but he'd do his best in order to help out one of his candidates. "You've heard the harper songs, I guess?" he quizzed eventually.
"The Finger points At an eye blood-red. Alert the Weyrs To sear the Thread."
He wasn't much of a singer, so he spoke the verse instead of chanting or attempting actual song. "That of course refers to the star stones; when the red star looks like a fiery eye, Thread will soon fall," he said with a nod, "I'll point them out to you once you get done here if you like, it won't take a moment. As to predictions beyond the star stones, it's supposed to be violent storms and volcanic eruptions, things like that. I don't quite know what they could have to do with the red star's approach but that's what the teachings say. The best prediction will always be the star stones, disasters could just be that, but the star stones always steer you right... Did that answer your question, or is there more you'd like to know? I fear I'm not the best at explaining things, but I'll do my best."
((My Pern knowledge is far from ace, so if I've made any mistakes here let me know what I've done and I'll fix it ^^))
