Well back in the old days before i think 1920, the japanese used old hiragana characters. They were:ゐ(wi) andゑ(we). They stopped using it after about 1920 * again i think *. However, they are used for names. Now, they are pronounced as i and e. Katakana also had some old characters like: yi, ye, wu, *combination characters*, wi[ヰ]and we(ヱ), also small ke(ヶ)。The characters yi, ye, wu, and most combination characters cannot be typed because they are super old, and are pronounced, like I said before: i, e, u, etc. But here's a link to see what they look like.
