Discovery...

Rain hit the window as if it was Halloween and the neighbour kids were throwing stale marshmallows. Lily, being pant-less and generally a slob at home, sighed to himself as he tapped a pencil to his head. His hair was getting too long, so he tied it all up in a very small ponytail on the back of his head. His bangs hung as he dipped his head down; staring at his paper in deep thought. Headphones sat on his head that was covered with jet black hair. They blocked out sound and also gave him his pleasure… Oldies.

The sound of rain hitting the window above his bed was muffled by the sound of a song by Busted; a broken up boy band back in early 2000s. The dark rainclouds covered the lightness of the sun and the howling winds hurled the tree on his front yard back and forth. It had been raining non-stop since the previous night, but it didn’t bother Lily one bit. All he knew was that he didn’t have any plans or special dates and that there was no reason to leave his house that day. He just continued to tap his pencil on his head as he sat with one leg up on a computer chair; working on his art project.

A couple of hours after, the storm had subsided leaving the sun to shine brighter than any larger sized star than itself. Lily turned his head and looked outside of the window on the top part of his awkward house. He saw the sun and clear blue sky. He looked to his paper that was still blank, but now covered with bits of eraser shavings. He pouted to himself and just stood up, took his headphones off, stretched and threw on a pair of jeans over his annoying bright red boxer briefs. He picked up his keys from the counter next to the door, kicked on his only pair of shoes and left the house, locking it behind him.

Skipping down the steps and down a wiggly path along his side of the lawn, he headed towards the park in his neighbourhood. With the playground equipment still wet, he was bound to not run into any one who would disturb him. He walked for a good five to ten minutes before reaching the cement path and a sign in front of it telling passersby that it was a park. He avoided the sign and headed down on the 500km trail that snaked around a playground, a small pond, some flowers and a bunch of trees.

He was right, there was no one that went to the park when the earth was still dripping with the remnants of the storm. He pushed his glasses up with a hand and looked in front of him. He looked up and saw what seemed common but was difficult to find. A rainbow painted the sky in pastel colours. He had time to spare so he decided to run to where he thought the rainbow ended. Following the ranbow's arch, it led him very far. Before he knew it, he was on the other side of the large park where the fish pond was. He looked up at the sky and saw that it ended probably a mile or so down. It wasted him a few minutes.

He still had time...

He knelt by the pond where koi fish were kept by the paid employees at the park. They swam away at the sound of him approaching. They all swarmed when he had food, but when he didn't, they swam as if he was going to eat them. Their orange tails splashed and rippled the water. Light reflected from the water and got into Lily's eye. He blinked a few times and looked around for what actually caused it to shine in his eye. While looking, he saw something light blue across the pond.

"huh? What is that?" He wondered. He thought it might've been a small robin egg caught in the cat tails. At any rate, he should've gone to save it. He stood up and made his way to the other side of the pond. Amongst the cat tails, the blue thing sat, almost ready to fall into the water. Lily bent over and reached an arm forward. His fingertips touched the egg and made it wiggle even closer to the water. His eyebrows furrowed as he made it worse. He moved his knees even closer to the edge of the pond and bent forward.

Slip. Splash. It was just great...

The ground underneath Lily's knees had became weak from the constant water splashing and it wasn't any help that the storm had beat against the grass for the whole morning. Lily was in the pond now. anything below his elbows and mid thigh submerged in water. He took a hand out of was muddy pond bottom and hoisted himself up. His knees, shins and palms were covered in a nice even layer of mud. His legs moved slowly in the water as he made his way towards the cat tails where the egg sat. It looked as beautiful as the sky. He reached an arm forward and touched the smooth blue area of the egg. He moved the plants out of the way and realized that this egg... wasn't normal...

"Must be from one big bird..." He said to himself as he stepped right into the cat tails and dug his hands under the egg to lift it out of the plants. He lifted it as one side of the egg pressed against his stomach. Something sharp hit him. His face winced, but he didn't dare drop something as delicate as an egg. It wasn't an insanely large egg, but it was still about ten to eleven inches tall. Lily stepped out of the water and placed it safely on flat ground under the shade of a tree. While panting, he sat down next to it and gave it a pat.

"I should probably look for your parents." He said, still trying to catch his breath. He inspected the egg all over to see if he recognized what bird it might have come from. It was no help that the only eggs Lily could identify were Robin eggs, Chicken eggs and those blackened Quail eggs that he put into Congee.

The egg stayed silent like an egg should. He stood up and began to scan the treetops for any large nests that also had eggs that had a horn, was purple and blue with a rainbow on it. All the nests in the trees were abandoned or broken. Not even an eggshell was left from after the storm. He headed back to make sure the egg was still safe. He sat down with his legs crossed next to the egg shaped thing.

"Sorry buddy, but I can't find them." He said as he lifted the egg and set it in his lap. The horn that was stuck on it facing upwards. "I'll take care of you until you can stand on your own..." He said as he rubbed a muddy hand print on the egg's shell. It got dirty anyways from sticking too close to the soaking wet Lily anyways. He pet the thing gently and smiled at it.

"Boy, do I feel like a mom!" He said to himself jokingly. He carried the egg in both arms as he began to walk home with it, singing the first track on Evan Brightly's CD, The Narrator.

"Open up your ears and Listen, until the silence sings aloud
And then you'll realize, Life is what you wanna make it,
Open up your mind to see that Life is something beautiful...

...You only see your eyelids when they're closed..."

Follow up...

Fumbling for his key, Lily placed his mark, a muddy print, on the key as well as the door knob while he opened the door. Clicking a light switch, the shoe area was illuminated by a light with two light bulbs. Sat down on the small ledge where the wooden floors started and took off his shoes that were practically covered with mud. His socks, also soaked to a point of no return, were also taken off. Heading up the steps with socks and shoes in one hand and heading down some steps towards the basement where the laundry room, washroom and general purpose room was. He tossed his shoes into the laundry room's sink and then headed off on his way to the washroom. There was a standing shower with clear plastic sliding doors, a white wooden seated toilet and a white porcelain type sink with handles.

He grabbed a clean towel from the shelf, pushed all of the bottles of hair tonics and face care products aside and made a nest on the side of the counter. He set the egg down safely and nudged it a few times to make sure that the nest was sturdy for it. He turned on the water and washed the dirt off from his fingertips to where his elbows were. The white face towel hanging on a coat hanger was pulled down with a sharp movement and drowned under the rushing hot water from the sink. Lily turned the water off and wrung the towel lightly so that it wouldn't drip but still had water in it. He carefully wiped the mud off of the egg. He hummed to himself as he did so.

'Oh honey pie, You are making me crazy...
I'm in love, but I'm lazy...'

The lyrics of The Beatles echoed throughout the washroom and in the basement that he couldn't even hear the sounds from elsewhere. His hips swayed as he continued to wipe the egg to perfection. The egg shone like the mid-day sun by the time he was complete with the procedure. He gave himself a nod of approval before rinsing off the face towel and grabbing his pyjamas, clean underwear and the basket of dirty clothes. He put the basket in the laundry room, stripped down, wrapped a towel around his waist and headed back to the washroom with his pyjamas and clean underwear. He pushed the egg into the corner of the counter to make space while still keeping it safe. He placed his clothes in front on the counter, put his glasses down and went into the standing shower. The rickety sounding, but not looking, door slid closed.

Lily took a quick shower and promptly went out to get dressed. As he stepped out, he smelled of cucumber melon, an uncommon scent for a guy. But he loved it. It smelled delicious.

"Come on you." He said to the egg as he pulled on his annoying bright red boxer briefs and then pyjama pants. His hair no longer dripping due to a thorough wipe-down of the mop head he owned. keeping one arm around the towel nest and the other hand with a mismatched pyjama shirt, he walked up the stairs to his yellow walled bedroom. Marching up the steps in a set beat, was the black haired male. He stripped his purple covers and revealed white sheets. From between his mattress and the head board, he pulled out a green coiled Sanrio notebook. He flipped open the book and pulled out a green pen from inside the coil. He began to write about his adventure of the day...

When he finished writing, he closed it shut, replaced the pen where it's home was and put the notebook back between his head board and mattress.

"Let's find you a good home too then!" Lily said happily to the egg.

Through the bedroom, Lily searched high and low for a good house. Nothing in his room was good to use. They were either too small or already held something. He stepped out of his room, knowing it was a futile attempt to find something that didn't exist. He stepped up towards the hall closet on the 'second level' of his house. Inside was a box. It had held his printer once and now served as a make-shift box that held printer paper. He took all the paper out of it and put it in a neat stack on the shelf. This vox was just perfect. Not too short on the sides and it fit the egg and the towel.

He ran back to his room after closing the closet door. He headed back to his bedroom and placed the egg inside of the box with the towel.

"Perfection!"

Surprise...

The days passed by without much excitement. Lily constantly tried to keep up with his nine-to-five job as well as his own personal pleasures such as painting and laser tag. Summer was soon approaching and Lily was starting to feel the heat of it. The days got longer as the sun was still shining brightly when it was half-past seven. He wiped the sweat off his forehead with the sleeve of his shirt as he contemplated about changing from his long jeans to a pair of nice shorts. The bespectacled male got lazy and decided to just sit and draw in his underwear. He took off his jeans and sat back down in his black leather computer chair in only a black t-shirt with ‘Love Your Life’ on the front of it and a pair of icy blue boxer-briefs. He lifted up his pencil again and began to sketch out the people on the paper before him.

When he was about to place the pencil on the paper, there was a familiar ring of the doorbell. It rung twice quickly as though their hand slipped at first, then they rung again to make sure it was heard. Lily sighed to himself and pushed himself out of his chair. He didn’t bother putting his pants on as he already knew who it was. He went to the door, clad in his black cotton t-shirt and icy blue boxer-briefs. He opened the door to see his friends. They all had drinks in their hands, whether it was soda or fruit juice. All of his friends were good children and did not take part in the consumption of alcoholic beverages.

They made their way into the house as carefree as they always were. Lily made a face at them as they set all their shoes in a mess at the doorstep. He cleaned them up and put them into pairs before walking into the main area of the house.

“Lily!! You didn’t tell me you had a new porcelain figurine!” One of his friends said as they stroked the glistening egg shell gently with a hand.

“Oh. Uhh… That’s n-“wait... If they think it’s porcelain, they’ll be careful with it… “Oh, well, I wanted to surprise you guys!” Lily said with a nervous chuckle to himself.

“Well, it’s quite the surprise! She’s a beauty, Lily!” Another friend said who was also into collecting porcelain dolls and making clothes for them to wear. ’Actually, I don’t know if it’s a she or he!’ he thought to himself as he tried to distract his friends long enough to take the egg and put it under his bed on the second floor.

“How about you guys start the video games? You know where it is. I’m just going to put this somewhere where it won’t bother us.” Lily said as he picked up the box with the egg in it and placed it on the second floor.

No one argued with him and just got on with the video games. Little did Lily know that under his bed was new life being sent from the heavens. The loud noises from the video game flooded the room that even the sound of empty closed plastic bottles falling onto the rug wasn’t heard well. Lily and his friends gamed the evening away and hours passed like nothing. They living room was a mess with chip crumbs on the rug and empty two liter juice bottles (that were closed) all over the table.

“We’ll clean up before we go.” They all agreed to it and started to clean up by recycling the bottles and picking up anything they could find that was out of place.

“Thanks guys. See you guys later.” Lily said as he sent them back out of his house. He didn’t know when he’d see them again. All of them had different jobs now. One was a carpenter, one was a computer engineer and one was even aiming to be a doctor! Here he was doing what he hated; a desk job. He sighed as he closed the door and almost broke down crying, out of sight of his friends. He turned off the lights as he wandered up the stairs towards his washroom to wash his face. With eyes and nose reddened, he wiped his face down with cold water, brushed his teeth and left to go to bed. With all the lights off, he crawled into bed effortlessly through the glow of the night sky from outside his window.

The night was slept away peacefully. That is… until the box under the bed rumbled and shook. The delicate porcelain-like shell crumbled and out came a young boy. He was butt naked, as any baby would be when they were first born. Sobbing softly, the baby crawled out from the darkness and saw something of his interest. The bed… With much effort to see in the dark and through his teary eyes, he made it. The little purple haired child curled up to the only heat source available; Lily.

In the morning, much shock came to the household. Lily, speechless and utterly dumbfounded, yelled at the top of his lungs, causing the baby to wake from his slumber. Cries now filled the household instead of chaos and panic.

“I’m sorry, please stop crying.” Lily said as he began to panic. “I don’t mean any harm, really!” He pleaded but on and on the baby went with tears and snot and the wailing. Lily lifted the child and cradled him gently in his arms.

Sure enough, he stopped crying and went back to his peaceful slumber. Lily was surprised at this child. Did he get pregnant overnight and not know it?! Wait… that can’t be. One, he’s a man and two, he and his friends didn’t even HAVE any alcoholic beverages! Lily, panicking to see what chaos this boy had done besides sleep next to him, he headed to the edge of his bed. He lifted the fallen blanket and there it was… the hatched egg. With the egg broken and this… boy here, what could it all have meant?

Lily sat down, stroking the purple locks on top of this boy’s head. A sharp thing went and poked Lily in the hand. He brushed away the purple hair and there was something no normal kid had. A horn… It looked a lot like the one on the egg that Lily had found. He looked over at the shell bits. The horn was gone. It wasn’t among the bits of crisp shell. Lily inspected the boy more and more before getting him a towel. From his observations, all he knew was that this was no normal boy. Yet… he was Lily’s new son…
