I want to address a problem that affects the black communities youngsters. Colorisim and self hate, I had to put up with it when I was younger. Because my fathers side of the family has only five dark skinned people (my aunts, one uncle and my grandma) but my dad is a much reddish brown color.
But after him my other aunts, uncles and cousins all are so light skinned they look white. With good straight hair, light skin, greenish blue eyes etc. And being around them I felt ugly and not as good as them and that I was too dark (Eventhough to many other blacks I'd be seen as light brown)
And another thing you'll have probably seen. The light skinned female with the obscenly dark skinned man. Or some may have heard this little rhyme.
Light, sit tight
Brown, stay around
Black, stay back
~ Discuss
Colorisim, Self hate, light skinned vs dark skin drama
etc.

[bump_whitey may have a point, with his reference to the "slavery days," when light skinned african-americans were given "special treatment" over their darker-skinned counterparts. But how much relevance does that really have today? It's black people mostly who treat each other differently based upon their "shade" of brown.
I guess I may not have much to add this time... (Surprising, huh?)
I mean, I'm not extremely dark, but I'm in no way "light" either. I don't remember there ever really being too much drama surrounding my skin tone. My mom and her mother are light skinned; my dad and his side of the family dark-skinned.
I never saw too much of a problem with my skin tone, not even when I was dating a white man. And if other people did, they kept it to themselves. The issue was only recently brought to the forefront of my mind when my very dark skinned girlfriend brought up the fact that she doesn't like to date white men because she is "so dark." ]

[I think blacks have always made up reasons to hate other blacks. If we were all the same shade, (which is impossible), some black people would hate others for dating outside their race or financial status, hair type or body shape.
...
Oh, wait...black folks are already hating on each other for those things. No need to be hypothetical, then. stare ]

Bleh. When I used to swim everday in the summer, I used to get really DARK. Personally, I didn't give a s**t. I was 7 and I was having fun. But my brothers made fun of me stare . When my mom was little, she was the only "dark" person out of her brothers and sisters (shes my color). At school they told her, "Charlotte dark, but she sho' do got good hair." She went to an all black school and told me how the dark skinned and people without "good hair" were made fun of. Now, I see people who try to make fun of other people cause they are dark. My ex-boyfriend has dark skin and they used to hold up black jackets and say, "Where'd he go?" That crap is so old and it wasn't funny the first time. Bleh... I'll stop now

I was jealous of her cause she was a light golden color and she was jealous of my reddish light brown complexion.
It was so weird. My mom kinda had a bad feeling about what was going on and had a two hour talking to us.

Luckily, everyone else does, so I get to find out what others had to deal with. 3nodding ]
