Panda, there's a really excellent thread on the help forum that explains what each individual item does, what stats each type of food raises, and what level your dog needs to be to equip certain items or eat certain foods. Its

The higher level needed to eat a food, the more chance the food has of upping the stats on the dog. So, at levels 1-4, Lacrima Premium foods have a pretty low chance of upping stats. At levels 5-9 canned food as a bit better chance of upping stats, and levels 10+ treats have a pretty good chance of upping stats, and the stats can go up by 2 instead of 1. The only exception to this is cookies, which boost stats by +2 each feeding and can be fed to any level dog.
When you look at your dog, the bolded stats are the ones that will get bigger boosts as the dog levels, so its best to specialize in a sport that uses the bolded stats. Your male Dobie will probably do better in shows than your female, since his sport lines up with his bolded stats. Your female you'll have a harder time with. I would start feeding her foods that boost conformation, because Show scores depend heavily on the CON stat.
