Yea, I used to be a drum major and all but its really hard and scary the same time(either your climbing up the ladders or stairs) while your playing some other percussion instrument watch your teacher/conducter conduct.Use the tempo he is using to find out that the band is actually following ur tempos.

There is a drum major thread in the marching band subforum. You should go there.

I'll give you a few tips here though. Whenever you practice conducting, do it in front of a mirror. Watch yourself and compare what you look like to the drum majors you have seen. As for commands, every band is a little different. Check with your band director, or look them up on the internet if you want a list. They probably include flanks, slides, turns, backwards marching, and possibly obliques and dresses.

If your audition is next year, there are lots of ways to prepare. The best thing for you to do is talk to whoever is currently drum major (a few months before auditions if possible) and ask them for lessons. They can help with conducting and with the things specific to your band. This also shows that you are devoted to the band. If you spend time before the audition learning about how to be a drum major, it proves you are interested in the position and willing to put in the time. If at all possible, help out with band things this next year. Be a section leader, or if you can't, be at every practice and see if you can help out setting up things, or at a volunteer band day, or anything. Being drum major requires a lot of time outside of band. You can't miss a practice and you are expected to help with anything the band does. Start that now, and people will want you to be drum major.

you can conduct some quicker 6/8 pieces in 2, there now you can conduct another time signature

=)

Like it was stated above, commands vary from school to school.

I agree that you should ask your director about that, and also learn from the current drum major.

I second the watch yourself in a mirror bit. That helped me a lot. Memorize the songs you're planning to conduct so you know when to begin and when to cut off.
Be as expressionate (is that word?) as possible in your conducting without totally leaving the regular pattern. Widen the pattern as it gets bigger, like during choruses and such, and make it smaller at the softer parts. Also, you can stiffen your conducting at a staccato section of the piece.

Ask your director how he wants you to cut off and start songs so you can practice that.
Never cross your hands while conducting any pattern. If a pattern is getting too big, swing the right hand over to the shoulder and hold the left hand by your side on two, then return to the pattern on three immediately. That works for 4/4 pattern, which the marching band will typically use. High school bands don't usually have a lot of crazy time signatures, but it will help to know ahead of time where changes will occurr.

I just recently made Drum Major and it isn't easy... You should really consider the stress you have to go through... If the band messes up on the field, IT WILL BE BLAMED ON YOU!!! That is really stressful, but if you do want some help... It will cost a lot because your school wont pay it... but you can always consider going to a drum major camp at some college

All the commands I can think of that we use:
-Mark, time, mark...
-Resume, march..
-Detail, Hault!
-Half-step, march
-Back-step, march
-Right/Left-slide, march
-Back slide, march
-Parade Rest.
-Band! (yes sir!) Ten-hut!
-Break!

That's all I can think of, hope it helped!

make sure that your elbows are even + you keep them up. pretend there is electric jel-o up to your chest, and if your elbows go below your shoulders, you get zapped. lol.

Be very clear and concise. Always have a reason for what you do.
Don't give yourself special privileges. Moderate any arguments between sections. =D.

Don't keep your band at an attention for no reason. It's really rude if you call them to attention, don't give them anything to pay attention to and walk away. Unless you're confused and need to leave and seek help, do not leave you're band unattended.

There's tons more. I went to drum major camp and am actually a drum major camp counselor.
