"1337" or "l33t" or however you so choose to spell it, is a contracted form of the word "elite" sort of. it's called that because (this explination actualy entails a bit of the history of l337 itself as I've come to understand it) the people who first invented the language were hackers back in probably the late 80s to early 90s around about. the hackers thought of themselves as a bit of an elite group among net users because of their capabilities and all (that's why thet named it after the word elite), but the language itself they invented because they needed a way to comunicate with eachother on web pages without the tricks just being able to be looked up by any kind of net police type people (people who make computer protection programs or prosecute for hacking and stuff) using a keyword search or general search engine. by comunicating in symbol and number words, they couldn't pick up in a search engine looking up the phrase "hacking tips" a page that was talking about them but said it spelled as " |-|4(|the language grew and evolved from just numbers for vowles in words, to an entire coded language with different variations. After a while though it got a bit too well known I guess and sort of died out. after a while though, the language got picked up by gamers who would tell people while playing online games stuff like "j00 |)34|) |=00 !!". from there, it still wasn't all that well known, but got a bit more known and the language was a bit more revived after rembering the gamers using it, the reference was made in the infamous "speak l33t?" MT page. (yes, it realy had that much of an effect. xp there's some other website more official on all kinds of info, like an online encyclopedia thing that talks about l337 in a section if you look it up and it realy does mention the MT page.)
