The first day of summer is the solstice. As for when that exactly falls this year I'm not sure but all you need is a good calender to find it out, or search for the dates of the 2009 soltices/equinoxes.
As for how people celebrate that's all gonna depend on the background. Someone else can probably answer that better. Though I am going to see if I can find the date of the solstice for you
edit:: Jun 21 seems to be it!

Hope you have fun! There's a few names it also goes by that I know of : Litha and Midsummer...the latter was probably obvious xp As for the first one, I heard it somewhere...but I can't remember where at the moment so take that with a grain of salt, m'kay?
Glad I could help (for once xp )

Well, I hope that everyone had a good litha! I missed it because it was on the same day as my little brothers birthday and I took him out to eat and stuff and gave him his present. But it was worth it to see his face when he got his present :]]]

Scubas_girl I realise that the summer soltic is around the corner. I know it celebrate the first day of summer, but is that it? And how do people celebrate it? There are many names to call it. Beltaine, with variations of that spelling, and Litha. People celebrate in many ways including, but not limited to: May pole dancing, the Great Rite*, roleplaying, singing, greeting the sunrise, and baking solar associated food. biggrin *The Great Rite is ... well a certain adult related thing when hormones act up. It can be done with your special someone OR by taking the athame(black-handled knife) and lowering it slowly into the chalice.

*facepalm* Gah! I meant Midsummer! I've failed! ;-; And no Great Rite included in the Litha/Midsummer package... Oh how I have miserably failed myself and you both.
