Science personnel provide the investigative research for ships and transmit that information back to Starfleet Command. Science personnel are also useful on landing parties and at Starbases.
Starfleet requires the Sciences Cadet to study at least two additional specializations. They may be from any science field, though they are usually non-Medical. If Sciences is chosen as a Minor, no specializations are needed.
Note that in the Trek era, "Sciences" are not limited merely to "hard" sciences. Social sciences are also considered important by Starfleet. Within these rather broad limitations, any science skills can be chosen for fields of specialization.
Astronomy, Astrophysics, Biology, Biochemistry (or Xenobiochemistry: (specialty)), Botany (or Xenobotany: (specialty)), Chemistry, Comparative Archaeology: (race), Ecology (or Xenoecology: (specialty)), Genetics (or Xenogenetics: (specialty)), Geology, Physics, Physiology: (Terran), Physiology: (specialty), Subspace Mechanics, Xenobiology: General, Xenology: General, Zoology (or Xenology: (specialty))

Soren entered her first class at Starfleet Academy and looked over her PADD as she found an empty seat. She was going to be studying Astronomy, Astrophysics, and Physiology as her Science courses. Soren also chose Xenogenetics and Xenobotany as her specialties. She was also planning on taking classes as a medic, just in case any future away missions called for those expertise.
For a moment she wondered if she should take a course in hand-to-hand combat or Weapons Handling. She had a steady hand with phasers so she wasn't too worried about that. When she glanced around, she took note that she was early for her class. Soren allowed herself a small smile and decided to access some of the material they would go over on her PADD. It was best to get ahead while the work was still kind of easy.

Soren listened through the lesson and made sure to keep some notes on her PADD. She couldn't help but smile as she got ready to leave at the end of class. Sciences seemed to agree with her, she was quite pleased that she might someday be a science officer on board a starship.
She gathered her things a set them in a messanger bag and swung it over her shoulder then headed out. She thought for a minute where she should head out to.

Shuichi entered the classroom trying not to trip over his own feet. He was feeling extremely nervous but excited for this was his first class at Starfleet Academy. He walked over and decided instead of taking a seat in the back because of his shy behavior towards people. He boldy took an open seat at the front to make sure he would be able to focus and be less distracted. He was going to be studying Ecology,Astronomy, Astrophysics, and Physiology. He decided he wanted Ecology and Physiology as his specialties. He was debating on taking classes on Medical or Helm and Navigation.
He quickly pulled out his PADD and awaited for class to begin.
