It was close enough to summer for the weather to be too warm for Joshua's taste. This was his second time this week visiting the ice cream shop. Though he was wearing shorts, and a t-shirt, it didn't keep the sun from beating down on him. He'd never seen hot weather, and never wanted to again. Blegh.
He stepped into the icecream shop. Ah, air conditioned bliss. He smiled, and walked over to the counter where he could see the flavors. What did he want this time? Cookie dough? Nah, he'd had that last time. Vanilla? Nah. Too plain. Chocolate sounded just about right.

Most guys usually went to the bar after getting their paychecks. Chris, though, Chris went to the ice cream shop. He felt a bit guilty about it, to be honest, because he wasn't taking his sister or his girlfriend--well, semi-girlfriend? Whatever they wanted to call Rory. But his parents had run off with Carmel, heading for the fair, and Rory was off doing Rory things.
And he wanted an ice cream boat. Or maybe a ship. A ship of ice cream struck him as better. He ignored the strange looks from people as he walked through the door and headed for the counter, stopping behind a spiky haired boy who looked vaguely familiar.

Joshua turned when he heard the door open, there was a tiny ring of the bell--perhaps to alert the workers that they had a new customer. He smiled at him, and tried to place where he had seem him before. The Christmas Party? That seemed about right. He didn't remember having met him, though.
"Hi, I'm Josh." He said, almost shyly. He'd never seen someone so.. what was the word? Big. Still, Josh decided to be friendly, and smiled again. "What's your name?" He asked, with a polite tilt of his head.

Chris sat down, since he was the same height sitting or standing practically, and the line didn't seem to be moving. "Chris," he said, offering a gigantic hand to the boy. "Chris Deakon." He had two voices, one slightly deeper than the other, and they spoke at the same time.
He glanced behind him as a little girl leaned over in her chair to try and touch his tail. Her mother looked worried. "It's fine," he told them. "She can touch if she wants." Then he turned back to Josh, still trying to place where he had seen the boy.
He had never had any classes with him, that he could remember...

Joshua too Chris' hand, shook it, and paused. He'd heard the name before. "Chris, Antony's friend?" He asked. Of course, he didn't know Antony--he'd never met him. He'd heard their names at the Christmas Party. (Not to mention that Casia often compared him to the teen.)
"Your voice is cool." Josh told him. "Do you sing at all? I bet you're really good with a voice like that." The younger boy sounded slightly envious. He could only imagine hiting two pitches at the same time. He'd love to do that. Then he paused. "I think I saw you at the school, the gift exchange during Christmas? I was littler then." He put a hand to his legs to show how much shorter he'd been then.

"Antony's friend?" Chris repeated. "That's how I'm known around school?" He sounded amused, and a tiny bit tweaked. "We're not quite friends," he said after a second of thinking. "More like..." He paused, thinking about it for a long moment. "I haven't killed him yet," he decided. "Although I've thought about it a few times."
He glanced at the line in front of them, wondering how long it would be until he could get his ice cream.

"Enemies?" Joshua suggested. "Rivals?" He paused. "Maybe you're more like brothers?" The last suggestion was based on the fact that Joshua himself sometimes felt like he wanted to kill his brother--especially when said brother had something Josh wanted.
"What kind of ice cream are you getting?" He asked, with a quick change of subjects. "I'm getting chocolate."

"Some of that, yeah," Chris said, looking up at the menu. "Some strawberry, some cookie dough, a bit of raspberry chocolate swirl, maybe some rocky road..." he listed, thinking about it. "And we're not like brothers. I've got a sister, I actually like her. Antony's a pain in the a**."

Joshua was impressed. So many flavors in one day! He would never be able to manage that. "What's your sister's name?" He asked, curious. Maybe he knew her--he seemed to know a lot of the girls. "How old is she?" Maybe his sisters would get along with her-- they were too young to play with much, and were, undeniably (in Joshua's opinion) boring.

"Carmel," Chris said. "She's a baby, but she's a bossy little thing even then," he added with a slight grin. "She went to the fair today with my parents and the neighbors." Discreetly he nudged the boy forward as the line got shorter. "She can dance like an angel. Obviously she looks nothing like me."

Joshua nodded in understanding, he had a bossy little sister as well--two of them, actually. "She sounds like my sister, Sammi." He commented.
"She doesn't dance--but she's bossy. If she doesn't get what she wants.. well, you don't want to see what happens next. It's scary. She's just a baby, but she and her twin, Reiya command the house now, I think." He frowned slightly. "Mom doesn't get much sleep with them around."

"Oh, sleep's not a problem," Chris said, amused by that for some reason. "She's the laziest thing you've ever seen, unless you prod her. She'll take a nap at the drop of a hat and sleeps every night through without a peep. You even set her down on a comfy chair and unless there's something really interesting going on she'll be asleep a few seconds later."
"Can I take your order?" a nerdy boy at the counter asked Joshua, shoving his plastic rimmed glasses up his nose.

"Lucky. My sisters stay up all night trying to set things on fire." Joshua said, before turning to the boy with glasses. "Um, sure. I'd like a waffle cone, chocolate ice cream. Two scoops, please." He dug in his pockets for the gold, and set it on the counter for the boy to count.

A few seconds later his ice cream was handed over and the nerdy looking teen eyed Chris apprehensively. Then pulled on a rubber glove. "Okay," he said. "I can do it, so somebody start the timer!" he called over his shoulder.
Chris grinned evilly. "You sure?"
"I can do it, bring it!" the kid said.
"Then I want--" Chris started rattling off a long list, speeding up when the teen seemed to be catching up. It was hilarious, watching the kid scoop and pile as fast as he could.

Joshua took his ice cream happily, and took a bite. Brr! It was colder on his teeth than he'd expected, no wonder people licked instead of bit. He watched with amusement as Chris ordered his icecream. He'd never seen so much at one time, much less seen anyone even attempt to eat so much.
Maybe this was what his mother meant by saying she dreaded the day he became a teenager--she liked telling him that he'd eat her out of house and home. And it looked like she meant it literally.
