I don't know if anyone follows shamanism but I've learned a little bit of it.. And the idea of medicine cards kinda bugs me, because it seems like some misinform people on how you can get a animal as your guide.

I've ran into a few that have thought that just because they got a raven or an otter on a card that it means that's their animal. I've tried to explain to them that it doesn't work like that, that you have to work to find your animal by questing and building a bond with it at the same time. But they still insisted that it was their animal because they had picked it out. "Which doesn't work that way either.. the animal picks you."

To me, a medicine card just seems like another version of Tarot cards but with animals and a small insight of what the animals medicine means and how it applies to you. That's just my take on them.

But I'm done rambling on on about it. I'm curious to find out what you guys think about medicine cards though.

i have never heard of medicine cards before. Of course, i haven't looked into shamanism really. Where do you acquire the cards from?

You can usually find them in the same places you can get tarot cards.. Book stores, new age shops. Places like that.

But like I said, they're not meant to help with getting an animal guide.. despite what other people say.

And if you're curious about how you go about doing that I can tell you a little about it. :3

I agree, and on too many occasions run into a similar problem. People think when they get the hanged man they're gonna die, or the obvious Death card mayhem...it's a little annoying but then again, they're not too informed about such information and of course jump to conclusions.

I've seen one medicine card deck that I've liked out of the umpteen many there are...and it runs pretty identical to a tarot deck...Maybe one Animal Oracle deck...

Ahh, yes. That could cause a pretty big problem and you're right about them not understanding what it all symbolizes.

Oooh, ya know? I think that is an animal oracle deck. They are pretty nice. But I'm not all that crazy about using the cards. I'm kinda strange and wait for a animal to stumble across my path in real life and then look into their medicines. xD;

But the cards can be pretty interesting, won't deny that.

Does anybody really have the authority to say, though, that "this is how this works and it cannot and does not work any other way?" I've run into many differing opinions on how critter guides work and how to find them, and I can't say I see any way of determining which method is "right" outside of each individual's preference and what works for them.

While it's true that most oracle decks aren't designed to find your critters guide (since obviously they cannot have all critters worldwide listed in them) there is a deck I have heard of that is designed specifically for this purpose. I think it was made by Lupa and it operates by using scientific classification of critters and categories instead of giving you something uber-specific, but I can't remember for sure.

I have a Celtic Animal Totem deck, which is based on Celtic mythology, though it may help determine which animal can be your totem. I know of another animal totem deck with a wider variety I've seen several years ago, I'll have to look up the name of it.

animal totem cards are not real shamanism, shamanism its a quest of confronting inner demons, inner fears, to come out victorious over the spirit world, animal totem and animal guides are never picked, they choose you, tru dream walking, and wild quest, in the ancient days it was call the hunter quest, where you would be abandoned in a forest, or jungle, for a period of time, you would be attacked by some spirits, and help by others, of course in psychology, the se sporits are not real they are your inner you, but to yiu they could have the form of animals or plants, and you communicate with the thru maditation and extasis, not the drug, but the state of mind.....those animals or plant, later became your totem or guides, anything to do with cards its form the middle ages, and modern, zero to do with shamanism...
