I can only hear the sound of my feet
as each heel connects softly with the ground,
but the sounds magnify with each step.
There’s nothing around to drone it out.
These heels hurt my ankles,
yet there they must stay—for now at least.
This dress suffocates me,
yet I must wear it—for now at least.
My ball gown contains three different layers.
Each one tries to sew itself to my skin;
the needle attempts to take away my freedom
and what makes me…me.
The first one is jealousy:
How I want to growl and snarl
each time I see a girl with you
who could be a threat to my “happiness.”
The second one is foolishness:
How I take you into my arms
no matter what harm you do to me
because I love you with all my heart.
The last one is hatred:
How I detest the way you always
treat me like I’m one of your servant girls
and think that my sex warrants my obedience.
You are the beast.
I am the beauty.
You are the prince.
I am the princess.
But this can’t be a fairytale anymore.
I rip this gown from my skin,
clawing at the stitches for my freedom
from you—freedom to breathe,
freedom to surface from the bottom of the ocean.
And once it’s off, I stand naked, feeling
so liberated. The ugliness is gone and
I can laugh—I can finally smile and laugh again!

Our eyes met as I left the castle with
