My psychiatrist has changed my diagnosis from High Functioning Gifted Autism to Asperger's due to the distinction being "mental retardation(HIS WORDS)." Read these descriptions I have gleaned from my mother.
1) Did not speak words until age 5
2) Held back one year in kindergarten for social growth
3) Very limited friendships through school, even now
4) Did not use telephone until junior high; still rare for me today
5) Could never really handle cliques
6) Had speech therapy up through middle school
7) Only one or two friends, if any, until about three years ago
cool Have no interest in gossip
9) Making a rigid schedule for housework
10) Took 8 months to transfer sleep from Pacific Time to Eastern Time; still struggle with it today
11) Have trouble remembering birthdays (and I am a woman)
12) Will obsess about a certain topic/crush for years (Sailor Moon Shitennou for 10 years, WWE's Edge for 5 years, Hair Metal for 8 years=and had Barbies until I was 13)
13) Often made fun of in church youth group and school for my limited abilities to make friends, communicate how much I was hurt, and general anger and frustration in dealing with the those little $#!+$ throughout school
14) Still get accused of being "in my own world"
15) Assessed as socially in my early 20s, and I turn 32 in July
So which is it - High Functioning Gifted Autism or Asperger's?

Well, I think the main difference between asperger's and autism is functionality and IQ. If you have an above average IQ, and you can function relatively well in society (or even somewhat) then you are deemed an aspy. However, if you can barely function at all and have a low IQ usually, you are an autistic.

Aspergers is in the same category as autism, and is generally less severe. The main difference is that people with aspergers are actually pretty well spoken and many have a fairly large vocabulary. Unfortunately, they both have difficulties with social situations.
