She reached up and brushed my bangs from my eyes, catching my gaze. Bennie’s bright green eyes fell from mine and she turned on her heel to leave.
“Bennie. Wait.” I felt my voice break as she stopped, her back to me. Stepping to her, I brushed her thin black hair off her shoulder. Glancing to me, Bennie’s eyes were cold. I let my lips brush her skin, my hand fell away. “I meant what I said. I’ll always be here.”
Not a word passed the young woman’s lips as she walked from the stone pavilion.

“Logan!” Darian bounded up to me, Surina close in tail to the young daughter of Hermes.
“Hey, Darian, Surina.” I smiled respectfully as Darian seemed to swoon and Surina scuffed her feet.
“Suri can’t find Ben anywhere, and her cabin doesn’t have any of her things in it.”
“Do you know where she went?” Surina seemed nervous, agitated almost.
“No, I don’t.” What a lie, I completely knew. “Sorry.”
“Well, thanks.” Discouraged, Surina turned to leave, Darian right at her side.
I looked around, unsure of what to do. The waves below didn’t seem to sound as near, and sure enough they’d gone out, leaving the once submerged rocks exposed. The cliff seemed like a decent way to go. To jump like I had so many times in the past and landed harmlessly in the comfort of the waves of Lake Erie. I shook the thoughts from my mind, I had a promise to keep.
“Hey.”
I leapt at the sound of Pandora’s voice, turning to her. I blinked around, it had been mid-afternoon when I’d spoken with Surina and Darian and now it was easily curfew. I shuddered at the thought of the harpies catching us.
“Hello?” Pandora was impatient.
“Sorry.”
“What’s up with you? You’ve been up here all day, Ben is missing, and I have an odd feeling you know why.” Her tone was stern, and even though she was younger than me, I felt commanded.
“She needed some time.”
“Sure. Whatever. You keep us all in the dark. If she dies out there, it’s all your fault.”
I froze, “You say that like you know.” My words came out slow, careful almost.
“Because I do.” Then she was gone. I wasn’t exactly sure how Pandora could always slip away like that, it was an interesting subject.

“I know you’re there.” Bennie sat cross-legged on the pavilion floor, looking gruesome in the black sundress I’d bought for her in New York last summer.
I shook as I stepped from behind a pillar, smiling somewhat cautiously. “How did you know?”
“I could smell you.”
“That’s kinda creepy.” I took a step closer.
“We’re not on good terms, you’re aware of this.”
I stopped. “Bennie, why are you doing this?”
“Because you hurt me.” She abruptly stood, her eyes aflame with anger. “You made this mess.”
“Bennie, please.” I couldn’t tell her I loved her, it wasn’t right. I’m the son of Poseidon, and she of Hera. For us to be together would tear Mount Olympus apart. Zeus would throw a fit. I didn’t get why she couldn’t understand that.
“I came back only because I had to try one last time.” I caught her eyes, the passion melted away into hope, disappointment, fear, maybe even love.
“No.”
Bennie sighed, her shoulders slumping. “Do you just not love me? Are you just using our parents as an excuse?”
I was speechless as she continued.
“You didn’t even tell me how you felt. But, honestly, I don’t even want to know anymore. I couldn’t handle how much that would hurt me.”
“Bennie, I-“
“Don’t start with me. I’m going away now. For a long time.”
I crumpled as my love silently slipped through my fingers, without so much as a goodbye.
