She was really comfy - soft and forgiving wherever he rested his head. The things Mixcoatl had said, they nagged at him. Made things difficult. He didn't want things to change, hated when they did.
But change was hard to resist, even for a person as stubborn as he was.
"No," he dissented with a quiet huff, kicking off his pants while keeping a hold on her. It was a struggle; he had to squirm a bit, utilized his feet to their full potential, but soon the offending jeans were tossed to the wayside. He settled back down, frowning up at her from his spot at her hip. "No next time. I v'on't leave, ever again," he decided confidently.
He contemplated the pajamas, decided they were worth the effort. He retrieved his legs, briefly freeing one hand to pull the pants on over his equally plaid boxers.
"Never, ever again," he repeated for emphasis, stretching the rest of his body out comfortably. He was never moving from this spot. "I v'ill live the rest of my life here. Because every time I leave, I miss more and more. More of Sydni, and more of you."

Something about watching him take is jeans off made her particularly uneasy. Her eyes stubbornly returned to the wall. If she saw this now, that was just taking advantage, right? Completely contrary to what she should be doing. He was doing it only because they were siblings, and that was that.
“Ever again?” Her tone was skeptical-- with shopping and work to do, it would be a mighty effort to see Valeriu never leave home again. “I guess I better go find a job, then.”
Ha-- that would kill him! Nothing set the boy off like rebelling against social norms and gender roles!
She let out another sigh, this time more from a type of resignation. Not only had she been lumped together with Sydni, but she had come after. “Well, I think you have a conflicting of interests,” She informed him quietly, hand patting his head, “Because it will be pretty hard to pick Sydni up from the sitter’s if you are never leaving--”
She leaned back, debating on whether it was worth it to sink into the bed herself. She was darn tired after the rough day, but what if Varu needed something? It always sucked to get out of bed once you got comfy.
Yea. It was worth it. Flopping back, Tepin couldn’t help but let out a pleased noise at how soft the mattress felt against her back.
She was tired too. She might not have gone through surgery, or been kidnapped-- but she had spent the entire day with her heart rate well at what must have been over 200 bpm.
And that counted for something, right?

"Hn," he grunted, and remained anchored to her waist, resting his chin on her stomach. He frowned at her. How dare she counteract his reasoning. How dare she.
She did have a point. He briefly considered using shadows to do his bidding, but that would scare a lot of people - nothing like a shadowy replica of yourself walking down the street to send the old ladies screaming.
His ears pricked up at the noise she made, and it sent a strange tremor through him. His mind shot back, to what Mixcoatl had said. She'd leave him, one day, for another. Would get tired of this, if Mixcoatl was anywhere near right. Would get tired of him.
Because he couldn't man up. Because he - he couldn't even take another chance, not again. He knew that the sister excuse was wearing thin. Ever since she'd grown, and how she'd been there for him --
He was an idiot and a coward. And selfish, too selfish.
He didn't want to let her go.
Maybe it was the drugs, but he found himself clambering upwards, resting his weight on his forearms to either side of her, peering down at the girl thoughtfully.
"Hey, Tepin," he started quietly, remaining propped up even as his arms shivered uncertainly. "If I...it's, it's kind of beaten up, I guess. So I'm not sure if it can even v'ork right anymore, you know. There's no guarantee. It's probably useless by now, actually. But," he trailed off, pausing and looking away, biting his lip anxiously. He looked back.
"But If I...if I gave you my heart, v'hat v'ould you do v'ith it?"

There were no words.
Her mouth opened worthlessly, before slowly closing once more.
Red eyes looked up at him, questioning the words as they poured from his mouth.
If her heart was at two-hundred beats per minute before, it was at four hundred beats per minute now.
What was she supposed to say?
“I would…”
...
“No… ”
As her head shook slowly back and forth, a hand went to her chest, feeling the thump-dump that beat on regardless of her words.
“…I wouldn‘t do anything to it…”
Her eyes flickered down, before fluttering back up to his.
… It could do what it wanted… But I would pray every day that it would be with me…
She held his gaze now, though her heart was beating like crazy. He probably wouldn’t understand.
…And I would do everything I could, so that it would choose to stay by my side.

His eyes sought hers, silently drinking in her carefully chosen words. It seemed he'd forgotten how to breathe, had somehow turned to poised stone as he listened to her answer.
"Nothing?" he asked, wondered. Tried to understand - her words, and her expression. Truth be told, the words went over his head. He couldn't understand, not yet.
But he could know what her eyes said.
Hesitantly, he leaned closer, pausing to make sure he wasn't reading her wrong -- ducked down, and carefully brushed his lips over hers, pulling back with a quiet smile.
"Thank you."
He froze. 'Thank you'? Was that even - was that even something you said? His face flooded red in embarrassment, abashedly looking away.
"I-I mean, v'ell, not thanks--" he stumbled, gave up with a groan and settled down, wrapping his form around her like he'd done before.
"I don't even know v'hat I mean," he mumbled with a sigh.

The kiss felt warm and inviting, and a million times better than the one that she had felt in the forest. Was this how it was going to be? Ever kiss that Tepin experienced seemed so much better than the last. It was something that she could get used to.
Even the bed felt better after that. Fluffier. As if she was just sinking into it. But that might have been how tired she was feeling after her heart had sprinted through the triathlon that was Vale’s words.
“You are drugged.” She informed him quietly, her eyes closed peacefully as her heart slowed its beating. “You don’t know what you are doing at all.”
That was probably true. He might not even remember this, come tomorrow. The thought stung.
“You should probably write what you just said down.”
He’d be trapped then.
“Just so you don’t forget it once you sober up.”

"No, I don't," he agreed with a rough laugh, cracking a yawn and running a hand through her hair. He tugged on the ends a bit, wrapped the curls loosely around his fingers with a hum of content. He really didn't have any idea of what to do, now, that he'd gingerly offered this up.
"I v'on't forget," he grumbled, slinking an arm around her waist and thumb prodding her in the side. He wasn't that drugged up. He didn't think he'd forget anything. "But if I do," he added, "Remind me. And also remind me about getting rid of the stairs and the door." He frowned. "V'e can get an escalator, instead. Or better yet, an elevator."
Sleep was not about to come, not yet. Curiously he propped himself up on an elbow again, brushing some hair out of her face. Red eyes blinked amongst a black background, as serious as ever despite his lack of sobriety.
"Does this mean you are my girlfriend now?" he asked, unsure, one ear flicking. He wanted to make it clear, less he regretted clarifying things later. If a woman was living in your home, sleeping in bed with you, and you'd kissed her twice - did that make her a girlfriend?

She stretched, feeling quite satisfied with herself after her small victory.
“You won’t believe me if I do. You’d be all ‘I d’eed not zay that!’ and ‘You are just trying to tr’eek me!’ “ Though her accent was implausible, she still made it clear that she was mimicking him. “And then we’d be right back to where we were before.”
When he moved back up, she hardly reacted, still comfortable in her spot.
In fact, it wasn’t until he popped the question that her eyes even opened.
“Do you want me to be your girlfriend?”
A simple enough question. But how would he answer?

"I don't talk like that," he countered plaintively. "Not anymore. I am getting better at speaking v'ithout it, aren't I?" He thought he'd been getting better at controlling his accent, so people could understand him. Sure, he still had trouble with his w's, but still...!
He hmm'd thoughtfully, frowning down at her. Did he want a girlfriend? His fingers clenched the sheets as his heart gave a pained throb. He'd had a boyfriend. He didn't think he could do that - ever again. Didn't want something that could break so easily.
"No," he answered slowly, shaking his head. "I don't...I don't v'ant a girlfriend. I just v'ant you. I just v'ant Tepin." His eyebrows bunched in frustration, trying to explain.
"Girlfriend, boyfriend, is different. Strange. I just v'ant this; v'hat v'e already have." No expectations, no awkwardness. He wanted to wake up in the morning and have her be there; he wanted to go to bed at night, and still have her be there. He leaned in again, stealing another kiss. "And this."
Kissing her was different from kissing Quinn. He didn't know how, or why, but it was; reassuring and gentle. He wanted to do it again, and again, and again, but restrained himself. This was still new, too new, to get carried away so quickly.
But if she wasn't his girlfriend, than what was she? He frowned contemplatively, one ear flicking.
She slept in his bed. He cooked for her. She helped take care of Sydni. He cared for her. If not a girlfriend...
"Does this mean v'e have to get married, now?"

She looked him over, before closing her eyes once more with a scowl.
The kisses, the kindness, and the complete turn around were starting to get her caught up. She needed to calm down, and remember that while this may seem like a dream, it would be completely stupid to get caught up in the mood.
This could only be temporary. An effect of the drugs. If she got too comfortable now, she’d only be more miserable later.
“I don’t want to get married.” Heck, he might try to run off and get it taken care of that day. “I want you to go to bed.”
Tomorrow. After the effects had worn off. Then she’d take him seriously. Now, he was just being silly. To talk about getting married so soon…!!
Was this the way he was? Was he this way with Quinn?
Did he really change so much from the way she knew him to be, once he had decided that he liked someone?

"Ah," he conceded, finally laying back down with a small groan, rubbing at his ribs briefly. Achey, achey. But he'd had the god on the run. It was okay. He'd hunt Nathan down later, kill Murphy later, try and talk to Tepin later. He knew the way she got when she had that scowl on. "Sleep sounds v'onderful."
Another yawn, and he gave into his body's demand, curling protectively around his tiny princess. Ruffling her hair sleepily, he dragged a pillow closer to rest his head upon. "You should rest, too."
He reached out to flick the light off, missed, grunted, stretched, and got it with another flick of his hand.
"Don't forget to remind me," he muttered, burying his face in the pillow. "Okay?"

“I gotta wait up for the tw--” Click. Apparently they didn’t matter. Not to Valeriu. Nor did it matter that while he had just gotten kidnapped, they still had failed to lock the front door.
She didn’t even bother. If he was right here, nothing would happen.
“I will,” She sighed out, trying to humor him. There was no way that he’d remember. “Now go to sleep.”
Rolling onto her side, Tepin wanted no more than to take her own advice. After the harrowing day that she had experienced, sleep sounded like just the thing to take her mind off of everything.
Which was something she needed.
Badly.
