BOARD ACTION ON HUMANE TREATMENT OF EQUINE BREEDS & LIVESTOCK
Below is a board motion that came about as the AHA President, Lance Walters, has been elected to the BOD of the American Horse Council. The Council will be taking up consideration of possible law changes and it was felt that Lance should have the consensus and direction of the AHA Board.

Whereas, There is great concern regarding the humane treatment of all equine breeds and livestock, the Arabian Horse Association and the Arabian Horse Foundation actively supports equine rescue along with responsible livestock and horse ownership and breeding;

Therefore, Be It Moved, After extensive research as a Board of Directors we support the reopening of equine processing plants for horses in the U.S. We believe the reestablishment of the humane processing of horses is in the best interest of the horse and livestock community,
and, therefore, direct our AHA President, Lance Walters, to support the reopening of U.S. equine processing facilities.
Motion Passed Unanimously. (Motion #16-5/16/09-BOD)

I have mixed feelings on it. Any person that can call themselves a horse lover would. No one that loves horses wants to see a horse sent through a slaughter chute, get jabbed with a dagger in the neck or see them bolted in the head. Sometimes more than once. I've watched videos, I know horses aren't the only animals to get treated so wretchedly when at slaughter. They say they're going to open humane facilities? That's laughable. I wonder what their ideas of humane slaughter is. Behind closed doors, it would be the same as always. By all means, this is better than the slow agonizing death of starvation and abuse that so many horses face now. That and turning them lose. Yup, that's the way to get rid of all your problems.

I'm a hunter, I've killed plenty of animals. It's not the same as slaughtering them. With hunting, it's instant and the animal doesn't know what hits them. So I'm not some PETA supporting d**k that has no idea what's going on. I'm not a bleeding heart crying over senseless things. I'm merely a horse lover that's sickened by what a horse has to go through before it ends up on someone's table.

It's too bad that there's so many horses that it has to come to this. I didn't vote to close the slaughter houses in the first place. But I don't support slaughtering horses. I support the idea that that's the only solution to the problem. Not everyone is cut out for the responsibility and dedication it takes for horse ownership. So the horse cut it's leg bad enough where it would take a large vet bill to get it back on track. Can't afford it? Don't own a horse. It's a risk you take when you sign on to having one. They're animals, they do stupid things sometimes and get hurt on the most asinine things. Can't afford to feed your horse? Why'd you get one? I understand that things change and we're in hard times. A lot of people buy horses for the wrong reasons. I know a ton of people that have done it. So your kid wants a pony? For how long? What happens after they're bored with it? It sucks that the horses are the ones that get the s**t end of the stick due to the inconsiderate, irresponsible, selfish and reckless wants and actions of people.
It just really pisses me off to no end. I have three horses now. It took me a long time to get just one and for awhile, yeah, it was kind of hard affording it. I can afford the three I have. I would do anything in the world for them. As stupid as it may be, I put their well being generally before my own. It's just the way I am. I've rescued a few and found them new homes. I did what small part I could to try to help.

I may tend to ramble on this subject, but I see so many hypocritical people that supported closing the plants in first place now saying that all these horses need to go to slaughter. Not that everyone that did say to close them and realize now the stupidity that was involved with that action is a hypocrite. In a perfect world, every horse would have a loving home and care. Sadly, this isn't that and it's far from it.
