So, one of my teachers, I don't know how jokingly, was talking about conjuring up a spirit during reading period with the rest of the class. I ran with the idea a bit, though I realized my board was at home (with any hope, that will soon change).

My questions:

1.) Has anyone conducted any sort of work in the presence of others, especially mundies?

2.) Any advice to not come off like a lunatic in front of my classmates?

3.) Any advice in general, since this is not exactly my forte?

If you're going to use a spirit board, people will think it's all fun and games and won't take it seriously. Which is annoying, in my opinion.

Personally, I don't see anything positive happening from holding a seance with people that aren't serious about it. At worst you get labeled a weirdo and ostracized.

*shrugs* I know there are at least two that may take it seriously...but that's two out of eight. I'm tempted to not even make the effort to get my board up here (which is a cheap Hasbro one, anyway.) I really should make my own someday.

I have a glow in the dark Ouija board from Parker Brothers. The one notable time I used it with some mundanes it wasn't taken seriously, although the results were very surprising. I made sure to do some psychic clean-up afterward if you know what I mean, just in case.

I just don't like the idea of calling spirits for fun and for the entertainment of mundanes. This isn't even taking into account the possibility of getting something malevolent coming through.

*wiki's Carl Jung*

...Interesting guy. If that's who the seance is for, you may have an interesting time no matter who is there with you. In fact, that could make it more interesting.

Actually, now I think I get what you mean. Must have been reading it funny last night.

You mean you don't think the subconscious minds of those involved are going to go on a rampage?

I had a Social Studies teacher for a semester who I suppose was kind of one of those intellectual types. He ended up explaining, or talking, to the class about auras. He told the class where to look (so many inches above/off-of/away-from the skin), and how something might contribrute or detract from seeing it (backgrounds, lighting, etc).

He apparently set up an appropriate enough environment and asked for people to show if they could see anything by raising an arm/hand, I recall a large number of people seemed to "say" they could. He then got the rest of the class to perform an 'aura cleaning/clensing/something' exercise, after explaining that it was to help people see it/see it more clearly and that it usually worked. I think three people and myself were the only ones who didn't raise an arm/hand after the 'exercise' and second attempt.

This event took place after a couple months, and by then the general understanding was that he could get away with stuff because he knew what he was doing, in a political sense primarily. He already had a reputation of being weird or not to alot of people, or atleast that's what he said. I suppose to get away with doing something in a public situation, you'd have to be confident, and/or fairly competent at acting and linguistic gymnastics to do such a thing, depending on how you want to come off. I can't really think of much that doesn't orbit around the central idea of lying to various degrees..

Take the practical line and give it a miss. At best, nothing interesting will happen, every emptyhead will giggle, and the fluffies will leave with vapid smiles at being "accepted". At worst, something unintended and malevolent will come through (especially since idiots with no experience tend to wish for something "exciting" to happen - and that gets heard) and something disturbing/awful will happen and scare the crap out of everyone, after which the blame will fall on whoever brought the board to class (that would be you). Commence the nasty s**t schoolkids get up to. In the middle range, something neat happens (in this case, Carl Jung actually shows up and says something salient), and reactions range from people who think it's neat to people who think what happened was a scam to people who think you're a satanist and need to be bullied into accepting Christ (or just plain punched and kicked repeatedly after school), after which their parents will call and harrass you via your parents. There may even be anonymous vandalism at your house - never underestimate the power of idiots acting in secret.

I see no positive here, just variations on a theme of suck.
