Eiji nodded, hair flailing about her head, because it looked like the Kind Lady wanted her to nod. Man, she really had to learn all this stuff that other people were using to talk, even though it was clearly their fault for not speaking like proper dragons! Well, she appended onto that thought, the Kind Lady was not at fault it was clearly the fault of the mother of the Kind Lady for not teaching her to talk right.
She pulled on the hands she was holding again, and added something very unintelligible that included her name several times and appeared to end in question marks.
"Eiji, don't pull the kid's hands off," said Richter.
The little dragon-girl's eyes welled up. But the Kind Lady didn't seem to mind...

Casia shrugged at Richter. "I bet she just wants to get a better look at everyone. Must suck to be short." Pulling Eiji up, she made a nest for the toddler in her arms. Richter, she decided, was like Jane. In theory he must be a good parent, the sort that people would allow to adopt a child (since CLEARLY Eiji was either not biological or she had one heck of a mother) but in practice, he seemed pretty mediocre. Casia had lived with Anna for a few glorious years, and she certainly knew the difference between grody and groovy guardians.
"She's not a girl who misses much," she crooned to the dragon toddler. "You're not gonna let anyone leave you behind, yeah?"
Jane flashed Richter an apologetic look from over her daughter's head. "So," she said, in a valiant attempt to be a good mother and have pleasant chats with the parental figures of her daughter's friends. "How old is she?"

With a breathless squeak that had to indicate joy, Eiji clapped in appreciation and then looked around from her new vantage point. The mountain of apples looked much bigger than it had from the floor and she gaped at it, big-eyed with a determined little frown on her face. One day she would eat all of those apples! All of them!
But that was pretty much the only exciting thing to see so she turned back to listen to the Kind Lady sing. It was pretty, and you should thank people for pretty things said (well, herself for one). So she hugged the older girl around the neck, which luckily for Casia was not very tight, or she might have had some problems.
"Oh - huh." He started counting- weeks or months, but it had to be weeks because of the amount of fingers he was putting up, or maybe the strange winged man was just screwing around. "About two and a half months. She's only been with me for half that, though." Casting an eye at Casia, he said, "I'm going to guess she's legally two, but she's physically between nine and twelve."

"Yee-es." Jane said slowly. "I adopted her a few months ago though."
At this statement, Casia seemed to become incredibly uncomfortable, and looked down at Eiji to distract herself, reaching out to pat her as she was hugged.
"I assume that Eiji will be attending the Liberty Center later on, then?" He seemed to know about the type of kid that attended the prestigious school, and Eiji certainly didn't look like an ordinary girl, although, she reminded herself, there were a few ordinary looking children she had seen on the school grounds. "How did she come into your custody?" Though Jane had never actually had a cabbage, she knew that the Liberty Center offered adoption by that method and that Casia and most of the other children attending the school had come from one. It was hardly logical, but after spending so much time with Casia, Jane accepted it as a fact of life. At the worst, it challenged all the things she had learned in biology as a girl and suggested that the Talk was going to be particularly difficult when the time came, at best, it had put off any awkward questions about how babies were made for the time being.

Richter nodded, understanding this statement. Adoption seemed to be a popular method of procreation on Gaia, which he couldn't complain about considering he was sterile. But it was interesting that the cute little winged girl seemed unhappy about being adopted. Huh. Would she rather be an orphan or something?
He nodded again at the question about the Liberty Center. "Yeah, it seems like the best option for her, don't you think?" The white-haired man tweaked his daughter's nearest horn with a smile, even though the little brunette scowled back at him unhappily for his pains. "Someone left her with my mail," he informed Jane, "I'm still waiting to hear back about the complaint I filed."
Eiji, in the meantime, occupied herself by pulling on Casia's ear. "微笑," she ordered, then she made an absolutely adorable yawning sound and set her head on Casia's shoulder. "Wo de pengyou," she said, sounding a bit like she was getting ready to drift off.

"Ah, well yes, I-"
"Pardon?"
There were few things that Jane was truly passionate about in life. One of these things was words, one of these things was perhaps life itself, but the third was her livelihood. The Mail was a force, more powerful than humans knew the wot of, and though she would admit that occassionally a few letters were misplaced if pressed to, she would absolutely not stand for the accusation that the Right Noble Gaian Postal Service was responsible for delivering children to single men for no good reason. Leave that kind of antic to prestigious schools, mysterious old theaters, and celestial interference! The Mail would have no part in it.
Casia saw what was coming and the smile that Eiji's yawn had elicited from her faded to be replaced with dread. Gently, she put a hand over Eiji's ear, trying to keep her asleep and keep holding her all at once.
"I believe you must be mistaken, I'm sorry." Jane remarked, letting out a weak laugh. "The Mail would never deliver a... A child to anyone! You're not allowed to mail living things, it simply goes against code regulations. Someone must have simply left her on your doorstep after the mail was delivered to you, it's certainly not the fault of the postal service."

"Who would've," said Richter with a nonchalant shrug, "Only other person in the hall was the mailman." Either he was playing it cool, or he wasn't seeing the expression on Jane's face. "He ignored me when I called out to him."
The brunette baby opened one violet eye and frowned. She was trying to sleep! Oh my god. But her best friend forever, the Kind Lady, seemed to want her to stay asleep, and Eiji herself was kind of content where she was, so she closed both of her eyes again and drifted off. Being so cute was a lot of work!

"Well, clearly he was either an impostor or the child was already there when he arrived. I'll have you know that there isn't a postal worker in all of Barton who would deliver a child to anyone, especially if they were not stamped and properly addressed. Even if they didn't follow all the postal regulations, carrying a child around in your mailbag is far too heavy to be worth the effort!" Thinking about this, she added, "Even a really charming child," to appease Casia's new friend. "And I should think he would ignore you if he came all that way to deliver your mail and all you did was falsely accuse him of breaking postal regulations.
Casia 'shhhhh'd Eiji and relaxed when she drifted off again, but Jane was already humiliating her whether Eiji was awake or not. Couldn't at least some of her friends think she had a normal family?
