So let's say there was a draft of every player in NFL history, in their primes. You have 29 other teams drafting in reverse-order format, so it will be a long while before your next pick; but you have the number one pick.
Who do you take, and why?

I would take Walter Payton. Many teams are able to build around their QB's but history shows that teams who are able to run the ball effectively win the SB/Championship more than those who have QB's.

To me, the talent pool is so deep that the #1 pick has to be someone that has unique abilities. Franchise quarterbacks can be gotten later on; there have been at least 30 acceptable candidates. Other positions have much fewer star players. But only a handful of players in NFL history have a skillset so outstanding that you can truly say that there is noone like them.
That is why I would take Barry Sanders. They gave him zero protection, no fullback, a string of mediocre quarterbacks, and teams stacked eight and nine in the box his whole career... and he STILL almost brought the Lions to the Super Bowl. He still rolled up massive yardage, and posterized people on a weekly basis. If he had played on even a marginally decent team, he would have won a championship. To me, Barry Sanders is the best player I have ever seen.
Payton (and reputedly Gale Sayers, though I never saw him play) is the closest thing to Sanders I can think of. Having seen them both, I favor Sanders... though it's not like there's a bad choice there. Criminal that William Perry was given a Super Bowl rushing touchdown and not Payton.
