I'm going to quote my brother on this one:
Turn off IF in tournament play.
Proof of purchase: *I forgot who, but it was supposed to be a good player* lost to an *Less than 8?* year old kid during an items tournament. That is the "Shame of a Nation" right there.
I would counter the argument of "if you're hit by the items you're stupid", with, "If a box that's barely moving touches you while you're floating back to the ring, something's wrong with that." OR a character gets a smash ball while another person's respawning and they win because of it. Of course, this is only if its tournament play.
No vid to prove, though, but hey, it's like this video I found: (Posted for raising awareness of Blazblue and also because the video had my precious Bang getting killed.)

Assuming you meant the EVO 2k8 tournament, then I can;'t believe you forgot it was Ken. Like, it's Ken. cmon.
Idk, I blame that s**t on the comentators.

"Real men use items!"
Items make they game fun, and of course you need to turn them off in a tournament, but it is ok for casual games. LOL CASUAL I SAID IT. It annoyed me a few weeks ago when I was just messing around and having fun and my friends needed it to be "fair" and stuff. I still beat them but I think it would have been more fun with items.

Tru'dat. Items can add a lot of fun. Hellbox w/out items just isn't hellbox, and it's probably my favourite way to brawl.

Really? I've never really thought of Rainbow Cruise and Corneria to be bunched with FD (final destination) and battlefield as boring. FD and battlefield I could see, but Corneria and Rainbow Cruise too?
In my experiences moving stages are far too unpopular. Remember Icicle Mountain and how everyone hated it? I'm used to people refusing to fight using the "no contest" buttons on that stage (even some Ice Climber players) and to compensate they'd offer to fight on Rainbow Cruise, effectively I got bored with the level as I feel it moves too slowly and it was the only moving stage others would accept.

I must admit that my skills are mediocre when it comes to 1-on-1 and/or Non-Item battles. Because when it comes to fighting I am a very cheap and dirty. All I need to win is a little chaos to throw off my opponent as I hunt him down in the midst of the fray. twisted
Aww, so it's just from playing them a lot? They're both quite different in brawl from melee. Idk if you'd feel the differences at all, but they can make a world of hurt or... healing....? anyways, they can change things up. Kinda like falling blocks in Rainbow cruise fall faster, and you can not go thjrough them from below, as an example. Or just in general how walls are not just for wall combos (when opponents don't tech,) and using shines to trap them against walls anymore.
There may be added skill and difficulty with items on, but the fact of the matter is that they are produced randomly. Especially in brawl, a lot of items are VERY strong and can appear often under the right settings, or even not the right settings. Smashballs generally form every minute, regardless of high low or medium from what I remember, and a lot of items in a lot of situations can cause a stock loss with proper use.

We should do a brawl tornament. 3nodding
Well, I could run a tournament. I've had a lot of experience, and every tournament I go to I lend a helping hand, sooooo yeah. Firstly though, would you guys want it to be run by my rules, "casual" rules, or a moderation in between? Games ARE still fun without items, guys. wink It'd also depend if we got enough people or not: I won't run something with less than 8 people. ): Finally, I'd need to know if people would rather do it just some evening, or if they'd prefer to have it over a few weeks. I HIGHLY prefer the single day method as it isn't spread out as much.

Well. the reason they might look at themselves as serious smashers is becasue they look at all aspects of the games (even items; they actually spawn more around the winner than they do the loser, as proven by Wobbles, an Arizona smasher) to make them as good as possibles. Matchups, hitboxes (palces where your attacks will hit, kinda like how on luigi's aerial down a there is a small hitbox on it that will spike or send the oppoent straight downard instead of it's general up and awaaay hitbox that usually hits.) and just about anything in smash that you can think of are theorized and tested by people to prepare them as they grow as experienced brawlers. Really, they're just smashers that are going to improve best they can, which there are a lot of levels of play to go.
Do you remmeber the names of the tournaments you've gone to? How big of attendents? Run by fellow players or establishments and businesses?
Hehehe. Yeah, Subspace emissary is one of my favourites. It actually burns my balls because one of the greatest parts of it is the whole plot (or what there is of it) since it's just like, "omg, link and yoshi" or "Link vs Mario!" and all that jazz.

Okay, so they've spent a lot of time on the game. They've contemplated the rules and realized that they need to get their opponent in a certain box of range.
Um...
So what?
That's something you pick up along the way of playing the game. The more times you miss somebody, lets just say with Toon Link's up smash, the more you need to think about where you are in relation to your opponent. You need to notice if the person flies off after your done, or sticks around. You need to move closer, you need to move farther.
I don't find comprehension of hitboxes, or anything in smash for that matter, to be impressive in any way. It's a videogame. Other people understand it to, there's no reason to get on a high horse.
Also, I went back and read my post and immediately realized I made it sound like I went to 0979868969 tournaments, or something - and that's simply not the case. 3 I was getting all heated in my anti-srsbrawl talk that I made myself sound more reputable? No clue why. Anyway, all tourneys I have been in have been organized by players. One was at a convention (Not a brawl convention. xD ) and a few online tournament. The convention was Ubercon, and I forget the online ones because they're all from guilds I've since left, and a website I've since lost. 3
Okay, Link and Yoshi is weird. But Pikachu and Samus? Weird. Just weird.
I SAW SOMEONE, FORT, MENTION NEW PORK CITY.
UGGGGGHHHHHHHH.
Basically, playing on that stages makes me want to slit my wrists. It is large, very large. It is so large that it makes me angry.
I hate it.

Sorry.
You never post in the Sniped D'. So I assumed that not even a brawl thread would get you to post here. 3
@Trisk: I'm sorry. 3 My opinions aren't like a judgment on all "brawlers." Just the jerks that think they're immediately a better player because they like to do things srs4srsly. Spending a lot of time playing the game makes you better, yes. But it doesn't give anyone doucherights.

Well, that's spacing that you're talking about, which is one small part of smash, and it's kinda not even simplifiable to that. There are other factors that go in, such as your opponents spacing. In my current level, being a more defensive player, I don't miss attacks. I either hit, hit their shield, or get challenged and hit out of my attack if I have less priority. Every missed attack can get you punished, easier and easier to do so as the levels of play rise.
Another part of smash, mostly melee, and least in ssb is DI. Directional Influence, which is probably the single most important thing in smash. I won't go into the stuff about how to do it, but there are many levels of it. A lot of it requires you to be acting with DI JUST as you get hit, and then you can DI, double stick DI, smash DI, quarter circle DI, and s**t I don't even know about. There's also like, momentum cancelling and some of that stuff I mentioned in melee stuff only, but it's really confusing all of it, I get headaches trying to comprehend how to get the most excellent DI possible.
An example of DI is DJ Nintendo, who has the best DI right now among melee smashers.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94EsZdpzwl4
The real show starts when DJ Nintendo gets on his last life. The reason he was suriving was because of his Directional influence, which he can control to a degree how much and where he gets sent flying.
If that's a bad example, then here's a more clear version of DI.

Also take notes of the percentages.
Naw, I was mostly just interested. Player run are usually the best, due to experience and actually knowing the game as opposed to throwing together random rules and not using tio (seriously, tio is the godsend of any tournament hoster... of ANYTHING! <3).
My favourite pairup was actually Metaknight and Ice Climbers.
