Hello again,
Teddie, young Bear Hamster was climbing on the water bottle (I always try to stop him, but he keeps doing it,) well last night he fell and caught his finger in it somehow on the way down. As soon as I noticed it, I went to help him, but he twisted up his finger pretty bad. It swelled up and looked bruised up. He was walking on it fine though, no limp, and seemed okay when I touched it (he didn't cry out or anything) It doesn't look as bruised, but it is still swollen. He's still walking fine, no limping. I don't think he broke anything, is there anything I can do to help him with the swelling? And do you think it will heal okay with time? What should I do?
I'm really worried...
Thanks
~Em

Hmm, that is a tough one. I know that some antinflammatories have been used in pocket pets, but without going to a vet, that might be hard.
If your hammie will tolerate soaking his little paw in some warm water that may help him feel better. It will pull out any infection if it is present and will feel good if it is just hurt.
Encourage him to rest by removing his wheel if he has one and removing any climbing areas of his cage.
Remove any cage mates also.
It sounds like you are taking good care of him. I think he will be just fine.
Sorry I missed your message yesterday.

Thanks for the reply. I did take out the wheel yesterday, just in case. The soaking idea is wonderful, I will try that. His finger is no longer purple, just a little pink and swollen, so it's getting better from what I see. And like I said he's not limping or showing pain when walking. I just worry about him. I don't know if you have read my other posts about him, but he has been very afraid since I took him home. It's been very hard to gain his trust, and I think this has been a weird blessing in disguise. I think he feels I saved him from the water bottle trap he got himself into. He's been out and about all night tonight, something he never does when I'm in the living room. Usually if he knows people are around he will slink around and hide until the coast is clear, even if he wants to come out and play. Tonight he is being super cuddly and playful. I put my hand in the tank to give him a little pet and he climbed on my hand and waited for a little elevator ride! I was so happy I wanted to cry, he never trusted me enough to do that before.

I did read your previous posts about him, but did not have any advice to give at the time. Things work in mysterious ways. It apparently was a blessing in disguise. I am glad that the two of you are getting along better, although I would not wish an injury on anyone.

I'm just saying that its funny how things worked out that way. I gave him a little soak last night, he seemed to like it, he didn't wiggle too much or anything. But he had so much energy, he wanted to run around after a little while. He was being really sweet again last night. When I put him back in his tank, he sat in one place, staring outside looking at me with sad little puppy eyes cause he wanted to come back out. It was soo cute, I had to take him back out. And he was real happy to be picked up!!He's like a totally different hamster overnight. smile His finger is almost completely back to normal. Just a tiny bit pink and swollen, I think it will be all better in a day or two!

Glad to hear that your little guy is feeling better. And I never did think that you were glad he had been hurt.
