Other than the distinctive body, what makes a Dymaxion different from any other car?

Three wheels, two in front, one in back!

Interesting. Is the lone wheel a drive wheel or for steering?

The lone (rear) wheel is for steering, and the two front wheels are for propulsion. While that is an interesting design, the Wikipedia article about the Dymaxion notes that the rear-wheel steering is counterintuitive, and it doesn't really sound all that practical.

I'd be happy with a nice first generation VW Transporter (AKA the "Hippie Van").

I know it's not retro, but if you like the basic design of the Dymaxion, the modern prototype Aptera 2 hybrid car is designed with much of the same principles in mind. It's also just a 2 seater, a far cry from the 11 seats of the Dymaxion!

Still looks cool in a "Mirror's Edge," blinding white cyberpunk sort of way.

my god.

The car might actually be cool if the rear wheel was for propulsion and the front two for steering. Damn...11 seats?

Counterintuitive only if you're not used to steering a boat.

Hell, I don't care about the practicality of the thing. I just want one to cruise the strip in. Imagine the gaping jaws and popping eyes!

If I have my info correct, the first demonstration of the Dymaxion at the 1939 World's Fair was a crash-and-burn, killing the driver. Thus the car was never mass-produced.

Still, it's a cool looking ride.
