This game is for PS2 video gaming console. It is a 1 player game unless you have gone through all three parts at least once or have got some cards then you can duel with a second controller.
But, for now, lets focus on the 1 player mode.
You've gotten past the title song, which I think is cool (opinion only), and have a choice.
New Game or Continue.
If you have never played this game before ever, start a new game.
Your character will be named Konami unless you want to change the name.

To change your character's name
Go into the change name option. It will say what button to push, so no worries.
Then, what you do is use the R1 to advance the cursor to the I in konami. Press the Circle button to erase the name one letter at a time.
After that move your left analog stick over the letters, pressing x each time you get a letter you want to spell the name you want.
Once you have your name changed, press start and confirm by pressing the other button.
(Its the one you didn't pick when your name was KONAMI)

Part 1
Partner choosing!
Yep, you guessed it... there is some suggestive Yaoi in here right now. Unless you choose to team up with Alexis, then you're a straight guy, but there's only one girl (Alexis) and the rest are guys.
So, if you're not gay, too bad! You won't like this if you are not open to boy-love suggestive material.
Your options to befriend for the upcoming tournament are:
1. Jaden Yuki - Elemental Hero deck 2. Syrus Truesdale - Vehicle deck 3. Chumley Huffington - Beast Kingdom Deck. 4. Bastion Misawa - Earth Dwellers deck 5. Alexis Rhodes - Cyber Chick deck. 6. Zane Truesdale - Cyber Dragon deck. 7. Chazz Princeton - Ojama deck, Armored Dragon Deck, and the VWXYZ dragon cannon deck.
Chazz is the most difficult partner to get since you cannot befriend him until after he gets expelled and comes back. I remember the look on our captain's face when she found out that Chazz gets expelled in the first part.
She was so depressed. Too bad I didn't get pictures. (Sorry, bad humor.)
In any event, my advice is don't go for Chazz unless you really want to build your decks first. There are many to build on and each has percentages of completion of each type.
Like I said, this is more of a gotta catch em all type game.
My advice, if there is any, is go for Jaden first off. He is the easiest to win the heart of. (Meaning, he must be the most gay out of all of these).
You can either duel him or win his heart with food. 50 Duel points gets you a sandwich at the store.
To get duel points is easy. Duel.
Walk up to a player after day 1, which is when you meet and greet your friends. (Good for first timers)
When you are close enough, then you can press x to open the mini menu.
You can talk, duel, give a gift, or... there's one more option, but I forget what it is.
What you want to select is duel.
You want to do this lots and lots if you want to get tons of duel points. If you win 10 duels with anybody you get either a deck recipe or a bonus card.
When you start a duel, you have the rock, paper, scissors game.
For more information on how to duel, then go to empress dee's Dueling 101 in this section of this guild.

From time to time, you will have an event happen. This depends on your friends's heart levels as some events occur at certain heart levels.
*Take note that if you have played a Harvest Moon game before playing this game, that there are heart event levels with this one. This kinda adds onto my humorous comment on that there is suggested Boy-love material.*
On other occasions, you will have school events. There are three, I think.
One is when Chazz is accused of dumping one of Bastion's Earth Dweller's decks into the ocean! Thus a duel begins.
A second event is when Jaden is chosen as Class rep for another school duel.
Third is when Chazz duels Jaden.
Oops, I was wrong, there are 4 events. The 4th is when you get to duel against Dark Magician Girl.
During the first three, you may want to pay attention. Especially since you may felt like you stunk on the Sunday tag dueling days.
Yeah, your dueling partner must warm up to you before they are any real good. So, its like you go out on dates on Sundays... and you are building a love relationship.
This particular game would have made for a great Boy-love movie, rivaling Gravitation.
So, anyways, your partner that you've been "dating" will eventually ask you to join him/her in the Tag Force tournament.
If you want to term this as a marriage proposal, then yeah, its like that.

Part 2
No more sandwiches available in the store, but deck cards are.
You are given 10 medals. Your goal - get 90 of them by gambling a few at a time from other duelists, including your friends.
Once you do, save your game, then head to the special area that got the dramatic effect.
Here is your "boss levels" of the tournament. You duel your friends again, but you also duel the paradox brothers. The Paradox brothers own Gate Guardian.
Gate Guardian is a monster that is a combonation of Kazejin (god of wind), Suijin (god of water), and Sanga of the thunder (god of light).
Make no mistake, these two goons are tough. Especially if your partner refuses to listen to you, and if they are able to summon any one of the gods or worse Gate Guardian.
Personally, I have never seen the Gate Guardian in action during the game, but I do know that "Trunks" who is Raditz, and Empress Dee's son owns it and the three gods. He is the farthest out of everybody whose tried at the Bogard household.
If you lose on any of these final bosses, just accept loss and continue. You collect the duel points still and you can earn more coming up to, so its no big deal whether you win or lose. Its just faster when you win.

Part 3
Just when you thought your troubles were over, you now must find the Shadow Riders.
These Shadow riders are holding your friends hostage. (I can remember how upset Trunks got when one who looked like Seto Kaiba from the original show with a party mask on took Alexis Rhodes hostage. Trunks really loves Alexis. Its soooo cute!)
You find them by checking your friends's pictures. Then go to the Harbor and the special arena for the final 3 duels.
Your last friend and the ending boss whom you fight twice is here. The special arena is the same place you fought the "final four" in Part 2.
Once you've beaten this part, you are encouraged to save and then try and partner with another friend. You keep all of your cards currently collected and your duel points.
Plus, the moment you have found your "marriage" partner, you can skip ahead to the day before the tourny and you just need to gift that friend once more.
