Lost Light was grazing when he noticed the brilliance of the night sky. The moon lit sky illuminated the ground and the surrounding area. Water noticed Lost Light's attention to the sky. He nudged Lost Light's front leg. Lost Light looked down and smiled. It was the perfect night to take the journey to the end of the swamp, to experience the breeze found among the shallowest marshes and the barren fields, just once would he like to feel it's chill. He found some berries and managed to find some grub. He and Water ate preparing for the journey north. They Began the journey north bound, both full off of the fruits and bugs. They were unaware what would they would encounter but were aware of the dangers that the edges that the swamp held. They was talk of stags and mares that were birthed from the swamp. The stories of the Thistle were echoing through the swamp but so were the tales of the crane and of the swamp taking shape within one. Lost Light venture into the moonlit night with, Water, his companion, seeking word of what was to become of the swamp and of what part he was to play in it.

Wicked Gaze had changed since she mated, her disposition was lighter and much less seductive. She had seduced one buck and now that they parted and she was left with a child to care for she become docile. She had an urge to protect, and with her looks was seldom given the chance. Once her daughter grew she had the chance to protect young fillies and colts from the beast that many said Wicked Gaze was an incarnate of. She guarded the edge of the swamp from the young kimeti so they would scurry and run off back to the heart of Matope. Tonight, she was happy, Thistle seldom attacked on nights when the moon was so radiant Wicked Gaze was less likely to hear the shrieks of the young. She made her rounds around the outskirts of the swamp on the northern border, occasionally hearing the bushes move when a foxbun was finding food or when a crane was preparing a nest for the night. She looked out into the brilliant moon wondering if anyone was looking at it too.

Lost Light and Water were close to the out skirts of the swamp, the rivers became less frequent and the trees were thinner. The area was becoming more and more barren. Lost Light began to understand how the swamp dwindling spirit could frighten many kimeti back to the heart of matope never to return to the outskirts again. There were fewer cranes about the sky and they chirps of songbirds were gone. Lost Light heard the howl of an owl cat, then the swamp fell silent. His nerves stood still he held his breath as he saw a pair of glowing red eyes quite the opposite of the glowing green eyes of Sleep Bringing Flower that he had encountered in his youth. Water was scared and was silent like Lost Light. The red eyes drew Lost Light in. The mark above the red eyes that matched in color burned in his mind. It was Thistle he thought, she was the last thing he wanted to encounter on the northern border. He could not turn back now. He emerged from the bushes that he stood behind and announced himself to the black doe. "I am Lost Light, Thistle, your evil ways will stop after I defeat you! the young kimeti of the swamp will be taken no more!" He spoke with courage, but with a slightly quivering lip, that feared death.

Wicked Gaze had never experienced an encounter like this in the past. Usually the bucks and does that wanted to venture to the northern border would wait until she was far enough away and would gallop across her patrol line. The ones that were not so courageous would run back to the swamp immediately or hid in a bush until Wicked Gaze was far enough away to hear them run. She thought over what she would do and then spoke, "Shhhhhhhh, I'm not Thistle as you think I am, she is further out into the plains. I am here to protect the youth from her dangers. Is there anything I can do to make you believe me?" She looked at the blue and gold kimeti with golden eyes sincerely. Wicked Gaze hoped he would believe him.

Lost Light lowered his proud head and thought, could this doe who wanders the borders of the north and looks exactly how the stories describe not be the legendary Thistle. He thought it over and computed her plea. For one, in Lost Lights mind he imagined Thistle as a mare, and imagined she would have snatched him into her grasp at first gaze. The legends speak of her power to grasp a kimeti and control them with her eyes, this doe in front of him had not been any of the things he imagined thistle as, except the looks. He thought out her request and responded. "Show and tell me your name its reduction, and what possessed you to protect the young kimeti that venture to the northern border."

Wicked Gaze understood his reason. He asked for her name to confirm it was not Thistle and her mark to back it up, the kimeti also were familiar with Thistles mark, that was some times found written in the blood of the kimeti she snatched. She also understood but was embarrassed to tell a stranger her shorter dream name but she did it was, Leer. Thistle would refuse to do all three especially the third. Wicked Gaze spoke gently but loud enough for Lost Light to hear. He looked content with what she had told him but nodded, showing that he wanted to hear her story. "When i was a young doe the northern border was a refuge from the humiliation and agony that i was the target of in my youth. All of the kimeti stayed away from me except the few that came close to harass and kick mud at me. I stayed around here letting the young kimeti passed and listening to their screams as Thistle took them away, I seduced a few bucks, they came and went. Then a buck of pure white came to defeat Thistle but I stopped him from going further too seduce him. After he heard my story he understood me. He comforted me that night and accepted me. He returned to the swamp the next morning, from that night I have changed. A while later I had children and moved further from the outskirts of the swamp to take care of them in their youth. Only one of my daughters stayed with me after her adolescent stage. In the many months i mothered her I became docile and loving rather than the cruel kimeti I once was. I vowed to protect the young kimeti that wandered too far from the heart of the swamp, because my looks could scare them away without putting them in any real danger, are you satisfied?" she said and looked into his eyes.

Lost Light was touched by Leer's story, he understood her just as her lover did, but her intentions were not to seduce him. A tear dropped from his eye and shone in the moonlight. He was convinced that this doe was not the evil Thistle, although she looked it her spirit was the exact opposite. Her soul seemed more like Shiver the kind legend that inhabited matope. He was enlighten, the miracles of love and kindness had turned a distraught kimeti and made her soul shine. Lost Light was in awe, he brushed his tears off his face and snorted to compose himself. " I understand you, Wicked Gaze, your intentions are honorable, but you startled me. I would like it if you joined me, just for the night in search of anything that would give him insight on the direction the swamp is heading." He walked towards her when a crane quaked above it was black and looked as if it only had bones. It landed close to them and walked towards Lost Light and Wicked Gaze. It spoke in Lost Light's mind. "I have come to find you, i will be your companion. I was sent forth from the Matope, to help your find the mare of black and white. my name is Reaper's Message" Both the kimeti looked towards the crane in awe.

Wicked Gaze was calmed now that Lost Light understood she was not Thistle. She walked closer towards him as he spoke again. Before she could anwser she herd the crane above she looked up. She followed it until it landed and appeared to be communicating with Lost Light. She was awe struck by its appearance, but composed herself when it looked as if it had finished speaking to Lost Light. Then she said, " I will join you, just for tonight, then i have to return to my post. Is it coming with us" she asked as she pointed to the crane that had just landed. The crane, like her had a frightening appearance. She wondered if this could be the insight he was looking for.

Lost Light thought about the question she had prosposed. He understood what she meant but he belived Reaper's Message was a sign to continue. " His name is Reaper's message and he told me he was sent by matope to be my messenger." The moon shone on the four beings that were under the brightly lit sky. and he spoke again. " We must find the black and white mare that he speaks of, he will give me the insight I am seeking. " The motherfather that is Matope had sent a message to Lost Light who now was humbled by the it content, sent forth from the heart of matope. They trudged on in hope of finding the mare that Reaper's message spoke of.

Wicked Gaze was content that another being that shared the look of death could be helpful and useful to understanding the changes going on in the swamp. They walked along the northern border seeing swan and kimeti foot prints as well as other animal prints as the walked. Wicked Gaze noticed something about the prints, the kimeti prints were replaced by swan prints ever once in a while. She pointed it out to Lost Light Who was unaware of the footprints. "Could this be the path that leads us to the mare that Reaper's message spoke of. "
